Japan took no part in the Sumud flotilla to Gaza recently intercepted by Israeli forces, an action that led to the detention of leading political figures from Italy, Spain, France and England and ignited large protests across Europe. Nevertheless, thousands gathered for a well-organized demonstration in downtown Tokyo on October 7, 2025.

Participants from diverse backgrounds, including many foreigners, demanded sanctions against Israel and denounced the actions of the U.S., Israel and Japan with a vigor rarely observed in recent Japanese history.

The prolonged period of relative inactivity among Japanese citizens appears to be ending as economic pressures and ideological challenges mount from multiple directions.

The procession, backed by supporters along the four-kilometer path, began at the United Nations University in Omotesando and proceeded to the subway station in Shibuya. Omotesando is widely recognized for its fashion outlets, popular cafes and upscale dining spots.

The sudden emergence of a large political demonstration in Omotesando, an area centered on consumer culture, luxury brands and fine restaurants, surprised many young Japanese who had no prior knowledge of the event. Those typically immersed in self-focused lifestyles appeared unsettled by the demonstrators' messages, as if the event disrupted the usual sense of complacency in contemporary Japanese society.

One banner stated that Japan is assisting in the ethnic cleansing of Gaza and the manufacture of weapons employed in the killings.

A flag combined elements of the U.S. and Israeli flags. Many posters and materials were created by hand, showing notable creativity and individual dedication. Unlike some events in Seoul where uniform signs are distributed by organizers, this gathering felt largely spontaneous.

Demonstrators faced private security outside the Palantir Japan offices in Omotesando. Similar encounters occurred near Apple and Starbucks locations along the route. The participants displayed awareness of various forms of collaboration with Israel occurring in Japan.

Most demonstrators were Japanese, though numerous foreigners joined as well. Daily protests regarding Gaza now occur in various parts of Tokyo. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has voiced support for the Palestinians on multiple occasions, and police have refrained from suppressing the events. Officers generally acted in a helpful and understanding manner.

The final portion of the march concluded with a large assembly at Shibuya Station, where commuters encountered an uncommon sight not witnessed since the 1970s.

Music, Art and Opposition to War and Racism in Tokyo

The area beneath the southeast exit of Shinjuku Station, a key commuter hub in Tokyo, hosted a notable political event on May 2 that attracted over 500 Japanese young people protesting war, racial prejudice and the challenges faced by workers.

Unlike typical gatherings outside the Diet, this event featured an artistic approach reminiscent of the 1960s, complete with coordinated music, handmade posters and flags, along with speeches urging youth to shape their own futures. Amid calls for certain leaders to step down and strong statements against foreign policies, speakers reassured alienated young people that they were not isolated.

The posters, flags, badges and other items were thoughtfully designed with a fresh visual style, setting them apart from events where pre-made signs are provided.

The protest functioned as a collective artistic experience.

A larger anti-war gathering the next day in Ariake, Tokyo, drew over 50,000 participants, while the Shinjuku event established a fresh benchmark by fostering an independent cultural initiative aimed at societal change in Japan.

Although opposition to war formed the core message, themes of racism, discrimination, worker and youth oppression and violence toward foreigners were integrated throughout, expressed through guitar, drums, singing and other participatory methods.

While recent anti-war efforts in Japan have often been led by older individuals recalling their student activism from the 1970s, this event was driven by younger participants, including high school students, who are responding to current conditions. The focus remained on immediate issues affecting young people rather than distant historical events.

The gathering welcomed anyone opposed to war, austerity measures and the suppression of workers. No police or security forces were present, and there was no disruption from opposing groups. Established political parties did not participate.

The event was organized by rapper and activist Masayuki Nabekura, founder of the Roadside Philosophy movement, which encourages deeper reflection on cultural and historical matters related to current affairs.

Nabekura regularly appears at the southeast exit of Shinjuku Station distributing posters stating opposition to racism, featuring a red rose, or leading demonstrations against anti-foreigner sentiment. He maintains a blog and provides ongoing commentary through words and music on his NO HATE TV program.

These protests arose in response to small right-wing gatherings at the same Shinjuku location during summer 2025, where participants distributed translated materials blaming foreigners for Japan's difficulties. Counter-demonstrations emerged, leading to regular gatherings affirming cultural connections between Japan and China.

Some right-wing individuals challenged the group, prompting police intervention. Japanese officers generally treat protesters with respect and avoid the forceful tactics seen elsewhere.
