American Lung Association emphasizes programs aiding those with critical and uncommon lung conditions

Some individuals facing advanced and often uncommon lung disorders reach a stage with no effective therapies remaining and may not qualify for or reach clinical trials. For them expanded access programs also known as compassionate use can grant entry to investigational therapies or devices. Awareness of this pathway stays limited so the American Lung Association introduced a fresh education campaign today.

"Expanded access programs can deliver hope to families confronting serious or life threatening lung diseases. Clinical trials drive progress yet not every patient can join one or meet the criteria" said Harold Wimmer President and CEO of the American Lung Association. "EAPs fill that gap by offering another route."

Three facts to understand about EAPs:

Required Coordination and Oversight: EAPs demand teamwork and review by the patient physician the manufacturer an Institutional Review Board and the FDA. A licensed U.S. physician directs care and benefits must surpass risks.
Treatment Expenses: Insurance rarely covers investigational options so costs often fall to the patient though aid may be available. Patients should discuss potential expenses with their provider.
Limited Public Knowledge: Social listening by the Lung Association shows many patients and caregivers remain unaware of EAPs as a choice.
