With more than 20 million U.S. kids confronting the summer food shortage, Convoy of Hope grows its nationwide distribution to 420 collaborators

When school districts across the country shut down for the warm months, the essential support from free and discounted school meal programs suddenly disappears. Over 20 million children across the United States count on these regular school meals. The end of the academic year creates an instant, severe food shortfall for working families already pressured by rising prices, limited jobs and elevated living expenses.

"Throughout the school months, meals arrive regularly. Then this shortfall appears," noted a local program coordinator. "Many children truly lack any food during summer. A significant share receive insufficient nutrition at home. It can be deeply distressing to observe."

Convoy of Hope launches a swift counter to this ongoing problem via its expanding U.S. Children's Summer Feeding Initiative. Through activation of an extensive national system of local churches, schools and community allies, the group steps in directly to aid families prior to crisis escalation.

The difficulty strikes rural and working-class areas particularly severely, where households often manage expenses week by week.

"As parents, we always prioritize our children, yet food costs run high, fuel prices climb, and all expenses mount," remarked a mother obtaining support.

Remembering earlier periods of acute shortage, she noted, "There were moments when we possessed only pasta noodles and I prepared sauce using ketchup packets. When concern arises that your child may go without, and assistance arrives saying, 'Here is some extra help,' that proves invaluable."

Convoy of Hope's Summer Feeding Program shows substantial increase in its second year. During 2025, the initial phase worked with 219 groups in seven states to reach over 152,000 children. For 2026, Convoy of Hope nearly doubles its reach, growing to 420 distribution allies across 60 regional centers to nourish 200,000 children.

Each week, Convoy of Hope's vehicles transport loads of targeted groceries to the centers, which then pass them to local distribution points. These essential deliveries include a week's supply of non-perishable basics, balanced produce, fruits, poultry, noodles, protein snacks and similar items.

"We operate as a modest congregation; we could never manage such efforts without the aid and provisions from Convoy," explained a local program coordinator. "Now, children obtain a weekly food package containing needed nutrition. I witness the joy on their faces. It requires only someone extending care to say, 'We notice you, and we aim to support you.'"
