With summer temperatures rising and rechargeable devices growing more popular, Mercury Insurance outlines practical measures to lower the chance of battery fires in garages and homes

As garages turn into charging spots for e-bikes, scooters, power tools and backup power units, Mercury Insurance is urging homeowners to recognize a mounting fire hazard that often sits close to living spaces.

Lithium-ion batteries run many everyday gadgets, yet damaged, poorly charged or badly stored units can overheat and catch fire, producing quick-spreading blazes that prove hard to put out. Warmer months bring higher temperatures and greater use of outdoor gear, which can heighten these dangers.

The U.S. Fire Administration reports that lithium-ion batteries factor into thousands of fires annually across the country. When such batteries fail, they may trigger thermal runaway, a chain reaction that creates intense heat and flames able to spread fast to surrounding items.

"Homeowners often plug in an e-bike, power tool or extra battery in the garage without a second thought," noted Holly Sacks, Director of Portfolio Underwriting and CAT Management at Mercury Insurance. "As these items grow more widespread, learning safe charging, storage and upkeep habits matters. Basic steps can cut fire risks substantially."

Mercury suggests these five lithium-ion battery safety practices to help protect homes and families:

Use only manufacturer-approved chargers An off-brand or mismatched charger may harm a battery, raise heat levels and boost failure odds. Stick to maker guidelines for chargers and replacement batteries.
Skip charging during sleep or absences Many fires start while charging. Charge items when people are present and alert to spot issues early. Disconnect units once full.
Shield batteries from extreme heat Garages heat up sharply in summer, especially where readings hit the 90s or higher. Keep batteries out of direct sun, away from windows and clear of heat sources.
Check for signs of battery trouble Swollen, cracked, leaking or overly warm batteries need immediate removal. Odd smells, color changes or hissing noises can signal failure and require careful handling.
Handle storage and disposal correctly Store loose batteries in cool, dry spots far from flammables. Do not discard lithium-ion batteries with regular trash. Use local recycling or hazardous waste sites equipped for rechargeables.

Garages serve as frequent charge and storage areas, yet homeowners should also watch batteries elsewhere, such as in laptops, phones, power banks, yard tools and backup systems.

"Technology fills daily routines, so homeowners must focus more on preventing tech-related fires," Sacks added. "Battery fires are often avoidable through simple habits and attention to warning signs."
