/PRNewswire/ -- With rising geopolitical strains and multiplying regional disputes, academics and specialists met at the 14th World Peace Forum in Beijing to consider whether equilibrium between China and the United States can still underpin a splintered world order.

A session titled "China-U.S. Relations and International Stability" assembled researchers from China, the United States and global organizations. The discussion was led by Da Wei, Director of the Center for International Security and Strategy at Tsinghua University.

Thomas Fingar from Stanford University maintained that focusing chiefly on China-U.S. rivalry misses the expanding weight of local conflicts, changing alliance patterns and decisions by other nations in forming the present international system. Although tighter bilateral ties remain valuable, he noted, solving worldwide problems will need wider global participation, and third-country interests and choices also shape both China-U.S. relations and broader stability.

Panelists referenced the recent summit of the Chinese and U.S. presidents, at which both sides spoke of their ties as "constructive strategic stability." Wu Xinbo of Fudan University and Yu Tiejun of Peking University saw the phrasing as progress toward steadier long-term ties. They said it signals movement from talk of "decoupling" and "de-risking" to increased dialogue and joint work on artificial intelligence, financial rules, arms control and crisis handling.

Clifford Kupchan, Chairman Emeritus of the Eurasia Group, offered a measured view, calling the present U.S.-China relationship "competitive coexistence." He observed that recent gains focus on setting limits and avoiding clashes rather than widening cooperation. With faster technological and supply-chain separation, he added, the dynamic increasingly echoes Cold War U.S.-Soviet ties, where core matters must be handled apart amid ongoing strategic contest.

Sun Yun, Director of the China Program at the Stimson Center, noted ongoing gaps in how Beijing and Washington read "constructive strategic stability," with China stressing cooperation and the United States prioritizing risk control and crisis prevention. She said future China-U.S. relations will depend on President Trump's personal style and China's rising national power.
