Trophies crowd the shelves - decades of rivalry, buffed to a gleam. Close by rests a simpler item: a handcrafted bamboo basket, its texture softened by time.

The basket looks vacant, yet for Sweeris, it always holds meaning.

She got it from a village artisan in China back in April 1971, on a trip whose significance was unclear then - eight days that signaled a shift in one of history's key international bonds. Over 50 years on, the basket endures, not with objects but with recollections: a symbol of how a random meeting between outsiders eased a 20-plus-year diplomatic freeze and rekindled ties between two nations.

"They remind me of those times," Sweeris said to Beijing Review on April 10 in Beijing, at a gathering for the 55th anniversary of Ping-Pong Diplomacy. "Those eight days are worth treasuring forever."

A fortunate error

Sweeris's 1971 visit to China started with an error: the wrong bus. During the 31st World Table Tennis Championships in Nagoya, Japan, in early April 1971, her teammate Glenn Cowan mistakenly got on the Chinese team's bus. The U.S. had no official ties with the People's Republic of China then - a rift since 1949. American passports even barred trips to communist nations like China.

Silence gripped the bus as Cowan noticed his slip. Then Zhuang Zedong, a top Chinese athlete, rose, welcomed him and gave a modest present. That kind act melted the tension. Later, Cowan and Chinese player Liang Geliang held a spontaneous training session.

On the tournament's last day, China issued a landmark invite to the U.S. team. April 10, 1971, saw a 15-person American table tennis group land in Beijing with journalists - the first such U.S. sports team in China in 22 years. Sweeris, in her early 20s, joined them. She recalls the blend of worry and thrill.

"I felt a bit anxious," she noted. "Yet thrilled too. We would compete against the Chinese, world leaders in my favorite sport."

For the next eight days, players from both sides held friendly games amid huge audiences. At Beijing's Capital Stadium, Sweeris played before 18,000 fans - a crowd unthinkable for table tennis in the U.S., where it drew only hundreds.

The games were just one element. The athletes met Premier Zhou Enlai at Beijing's Great Hall of the People, explored the Great Wall, and saw farms and classrooms, chatting with everyday Chinese.

Talks were creative. Short on translators, they used signs, grins, and sport's common ground. "With a racket in hand, you'd mime ball strokes," Sweeris explained. "Or simply smile."

The journey launched Ping-Pong Diplomacy, opening doors for President Richard Nixon's 1972 China trip and full diplomatic relations in 1979.

Five words spanning 55 years

For Sweeris, the journey's effects lingered well past those days. Back in the U.S., she became a sought-after speaker, sharing views on a nation alien to most Americans. She toured extensively, recounting not just games but the interactions around them.

"I saw myself as a peace envoy," she said. "It was my role to keep spreading the word, sustaining that link."

In the years after, she revisited China five times, noting shifts through personal lenses. Each trip links to one word capturing her view.

1971: "anxious" - entering uncharted territory. 1997: "welcoming" - mirroring China's growing accessibility and steady U.S.-China people ties after long isolation. 2006: "astounding" - witnessing booming cities, vibrant roads, and swift societal progress. 2011: "heartwarming" - revisiting spots and friends from long ago. 2026: "nostalgic" - not pining for old days, but noting vast changes.

Her choices mirror U.S.-China ties over decades - from wary distance to vibrant openness, now complex with history and lasting bonds.

The 55th anniversary event in Beijing occurred amid renewed strains - trade frictions and clashing stories. Early optimism has yielded to nuance.

Still, in Beijing, Sweeris spots continuity amid change. "Relations resemble marriage," she said. "Expect highs and lows. Full agreement is rare. But dialogue fosters cultural insight and problem-solving."

Engaging the young

Yet time has dwindled the original messengers of Ping-Pong Diplomacy. Of the 15 U.S. players in 1971, only four survive. The youngest near 70s; eldest, 90s.

Approaching 79, Sweeris persists in speaking, journeying, storytelling, and urging youth to uphold the legacy via people-to-people ties. "Such interactions enrich lives. You turn ambassador in that instant," she said. "Done right, our nations steady. Global peace may follow."

Jan Carol Berris shares her stance. As National Committee on U.S.-China Relations vice president, she has joined anniversary efforts since 1972. Governments should boost youth exchanges, she says. "Youth shape tomorrow," she told Beijing Review. "This 55th event emphasizes them. Many young Americans joined this year."

Dozens of young Americans marked the anniversary, many new to China. Like pioneers, they came with distant views - from news, politics, global abstracts.

"In the U.S., I thought Chinese might shun foreigners," said University of Washington student Vihan Bagal, at Beijing events this April. "But arrival flipped that. People were warmly welcoming - very supportive."

For Bagal, table tennis transcended sport. It built bridges. "Language barriers fade in play," he told Beijing Review. "Direct links via Ping-Pong Diplomacy enable this."

Activities expanded: pickleball, flag football joined table tennis. A dozen youth sports events bridged gaps anew.

Methods evolve; essence holds. Sweeris stresses in-person ties. "They dismantle walls," she said. "They build people-to-people grasp. Sports aid that."

At home, Sweeris's bamboo basket stays put.
