American Oversight Opens Inquiry into Trump Administration's Politicized Case Against Southern Poverty Law Center

We are requesting records on the whistleblower-reported political influence, exchanges, and processes behind the DOJ's pursuit of a major civil rights group.

On Friday, American Oversight initiated a probe into the Department of Justice's (DOJ) politically charged prosecution of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), spurred by whistleblower reports that top DOJ official Aakash Singh directed prosecutors to hasten the indictment even amid worries over the case's weaknesses.

These claims, outlined in a recent letter to Singh from Representatives Jamie Raskin and Mary Gay Scanlon, highlight wider issues with the DOJ's intensifying actions against people, civil groups, protests, universities, media outlets, and others viewed as opposing President Donald Trump's agenda.

"This case looks like a clear attempt to politicize the Justice Department against a group that has long combated hate, safeguarded civil rights, and confronted extremists," stated Chioma Chukwu, Executive Director of American Oversight. "Americans need transparency on whether prosecutorial authority is being misused to go after groups and people for political or ideological reasons instead of solid evidence and legal standards. This risk goes beyond one entity - it undermines civil society and the right to speak, organize, advocate, and oppose without fearing reprisal."

"The SPLC has for years uncovered violent extremism, taken on white supremacist networks, and shielded communities from hate and bias. This administration now seeks to flip the narrative on threats to democracy and its defenders. That demands concern from all sides," Chukwu added. "Opposing hate and upholding civil rights is no offense, and attempts to cow such organizations won't quiet the push for justice and responsibility."

In this investigation, we submitted multiple Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to the DOJ for documents on Associate Deputy Attorney General Singh's involvement, covering his interactions with Acting U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama Kevin Davidson and external contacts via non-official email, plus his schedules, ethics and recusal files, and initial hiring papers.

The filings also target Singh's discussions on the SPLC, the Ku Klux Klan, National Security Presidential Memorandum 7 - the Trump directive broadening federal oversight of domestic extremism and nonprofit efforts - and terms like "manufacturing racism" and "partisan smear machine," used by officials to characterize the SPLC. Requests cover his communications via encrypted or third-party apps, and those from personal devices or unofficial channels tied to official duties, per federal preservation rules.

Just last week, we denounced the DOJ's SPLC prosecution as "a perilous step up" and cautioned that the administration was "blatantly misusing federal authority against a nonprofit doing essential civil rights work vital to democracy."
