The seventh anniversary of Rails-to-Trails Conservancy's flagship initiative celebrated through new trail openings in Ohio, Indiana, Nebraska, Wyoming and Washington State

/PRNewswire/ -- Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, the nation's leading trails, walking and biking advocacy organization, highlighted significant advancements along the Great American Rail-Trail^® route as the group's cornerstone project marks seven years of steady growth.

This spring, key developments unfolded in five of the 12 states spanning the 3,700-mile cross-country path. From official openings to fresh land purchases, RTC notes that initiatives in Ohio, Indiana, Nebraska, Wyoming and Washington State are set to open vital long-haul pathways, forge essential links to community hubs, and tap into the economic potential of the Great American Rail-Trail.

"These achievements reflect the enduring resolve of the trails community and the unifying force of a shared vision that rallies towns around collective aims. Many of these efforts have simmered for decades, with the Great American Rail-Trail accelerating their realization," stated Kevin Belle, RTC's project director for the Great American Rail-Trail. "Seeing several states concurrently unveil trails, start construction and secure properties underscores the profound worth of this network to the communities and regions it touches - and to the country at large."

In early spring, a deal with Norfolk Southern paved the way for London, Ohio, to finalize the Ohio to Erie Trail through its center. This breakthrough advances the final 0.8 miles of the route, forging an uninterrupted 104-mile link from Dayton to Columbus's northern outskirts.

During Celebrate Trails Day on April 25, 2026, the Miami Central Trail debuted in Bunker Hill, Indiana, extending the Great American route by 5 miles. This addition links to the Nickel Plate Trail, expanding the continuous segment to 11.9 miles. Future plans aim to bridge remaining gaps, potentially boosting connected mileage beyond 35 miles.

On the same day, the Northwest Nebraska Trails Association and the City of Chadron celebrated a key milestone with the launch of the first mile of the Cowboy Trail Connection, gaining traction toward the last four miles required to fully integrate it with Nebraska's expansive 200-plus-mile Cowboy Recreation and Nature Trail.

"Opening the initial mile of the Cowboy Trail Connection stands as a pivotal achievement in Northwest Nebraska's trail expansion. Connecting the Game and Parks Commission's Cowboy Trail to downtown Chadron will yield lasting benefits as visitors wander the city's historic core. Momentum for such trail adventures is surging, and Northwest Nebraska anticipates building more miles ahead," remarked Kerri Rempp, Director of Tourism for Discover Northwest Nebraska.

In April, Casper, Wyoming, achieved a notable leap by extending the Platte River Trail eastward to Edness Kimball Wilkins State Park with three new miles, positioning the path right at the park's entrance. The upcoming phase will include a secure crossing over Old Glenrock Highway to seal this vital linkage.

"[This] signals a thrilling advancement in linking Wyoming to the almost 4,000-mile Great American Rail-Trail expanse. It's taken years, and challenges remain, but these added three miles offer Wyoming residents, outdoor enthusiasts and travelers greater chances to discover our stunning landscapes," said U.S. Senator Cynthia M. Lummis (R-Wyo.).

She continued, "I applaud this community's collaborative spirit in transforming overlooked or underused land into shared recreational assets. The bold scope of the Great American Rail-Trail and its drive to forge a 3,700-mile coast-to-coast pathway is truly inspiring."

Wrapping up recent wins, Washington State's Sound to Olympics Trail saw its first segments in Kitsap County's Port Gamble Park open this spring, establishing crucial ties in the push to extend from Puget Sound to the Pacific - a joint venture spearheaded by the City of Port Angeles alongside 12 municipalities, agencies and tribes.

Since unveiling the Great American Rail-Trail route in 2019, over 125 miles of new trails have been finished, backed by more than $161 million from federal, state, local and private sources. Presently, the trail stands at nearly 56% completion, poised to generate over $229 million in yearly economic activity for served communities as development continues. Another 160-plus miles, or 6% of the total, await construction.
