Financial analysts typically earn recognition for forecasting interest rate moves or asset price shifts, yet one leading investment research company has directed its quantitative tools toward a fresh target as the 2026 FIFA World Cup opens this Thursday: the outcome of the planet's premier football event.

BCA Research, headquartered in Montreal, has released its latest version of what the firm terms its most critical non-financial projection, relying on a custom two-stage statistical framework to forecast tournament results.

The outcome? France claims the title by overcoming Portugal in the final match. England and Spain, according to the projections, exit during the semi-finals.

Model With Established Accuracy

Rather than relying on casual commentary common before major tournaments, BCA grounds its method in the rigorous standards the company uses for sovereign debt and stock market evaluations.

The project began in 2018 and accurately foresaw France capturing the 2018 crown. In 2022 it correctly identified Argentina as champion via penalties despite the event's many surprises.

For 2026 the process unfolds across two phases. Stage one draws from five prior World Cups and factors in metrics such as average player evaluations, attacking speed, plus a home-field adjustment granting each host nation a 24 percent lift in win likelihood per game.

Stage two employs a distinct knockout-focused model built on data since 2006, emphasizing club chemistry and forward experience counted by games played instead of chronological age.

The firm adds a reigning-champion adjustment that reduces Argentina's win probability by 20 percent per match, capturing the pattern of title holders struggling in subsequent editions.

BCA observes that Spain in 2014 and Germany in 2018 illustrate this effect precisely.

The company further notes stronger performance forecasting knockout rounds than group matches, largely because teams that secure early qualification often rest starters in their final group fixture.

In comments to Euronews, chief strategist Jérémie Peloso highlighted Tunisia's victory against France in the last group game of 2022.

"France had already advanced, so the coach chose to rest several star players," he noted.

Peloso added that such choices complicate group-stage forecasts since elements other than raw squad strength influence results.

France Favored to Win Narrow Final

The model ranks France as the leading contender, supported by independent valuation data. Transfermarkt lists France's squad as the most expensive at the tournament, totaling 1.476 billion euros, exceeding three times the average for the 48 participating nations.

Kylian Mbappé alone carries a 200 million euro valuation, representing more than 13 percent of the overall figure.

BCA indicates that Didier Deschamps' squad, possessing sufficient depth for two strong lineups, should defeat Spain in a very close semi-final, with France holding a 52.5 percent chance of advancing.

Peloso told Euronews the probabilities look nearly even, yet this mirrors the reality that both sides rank among the top favorites and currently occupy the highest FIFA positions.

"The key distinction lies in the superior quality of French forwards compared with Spain. Our knockout-stage analysis shows forward experience and quality often decide such contests," Peloso stated.

Portugal is projected to eliminate England in the remaining semi-final with a 55.2 percent probability, a margin the model attributes partly to England manager Thomas Tuchel excluding Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Harry Maguire from the squad.

The projected final carries notable implications for both countries.

A French victory would make Deschamps only the second manager to secure two World Cup titles, following Italy's Vittorio Pozzo.

For Portugal and 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo, expected to appear in his final World Cup, success would complete an unfinished chapter in a celebrated career.

Prediction Markets Show Partial Differences

BCA Research contrasted its title probabilities with those from Polymarket, finding broad agreement yet notable variances on certain teams.

BCA assigns Portugal a 16.4 percent chance of winning the tournament, higher than Polymarket's 10 percent placing the side fourth overall.

Polymarket currently shows France and Spain tied at 16 percent each, with England third at 11 percent as of Tuesday.

BCA also assigns modestly higher probabilities to the three host nations, the United States, Mexico and Canada, than Polymarket currently indicates.

On Kalshi, Spain leads with a 16.5 percent probability at the time of writing, followed by France at 16.3 percent and Portugal at 10.3 percent.

For everyone else the tournament begins Thursday in Mexico City. The calculations, at minimum, are complete.
