Eurostat's latest statistics underscore notable variations in weekly work durations throughout Europe.

EU workers average 35.9 hours weekly based on fresh figures for actual hours from the bloc's data agency. This covers both full-time and part-time staff aged 20 to 64 in their primary role.

The numbers also show clear country gaps, prompting questions on why certain Europeans clock far longer shifts than peers.

Balkan nations lead in weekly hours

Inside the EU, real weekly hours span 31.9 in the Netherlands up to 39.6 in Greece. Adding candidate states and EFTA partners lifts the top to 42.4 hours in Turkey. Two further candidates trail closely: Bosnia and Herzegovina at 40.9 hours and Serbia at 40.6 hours.

These remain the sole nations topping 40 hours weekly, equating to over eight hours daily on a five-day schedule.

Greece at 39.6 hours, North Macedonia at 39.5 hours and Bulgaria at 38.7 hours rank next. Balkan states top the list for longest weeks, with Greece and Turkey often grouped in the wider region.

"No workers truly select their hours: they follow a standard pattern shaped by employers. Reduced output may drive longer shifts in those nations alongside weaker employee influence," Professor David Spencer from the University of Leeds told Euronews Business.

Jorge Cabrita, senior research manager at Eurofound, noted that varied time-setting systems could also account for why some places show extended hours.

Netherlands records shortest weeks

The Netherlands emerges with Europe's briefest average week at just 31.9 hours.

Cabrita observed that part-time staff make up nearly 43 percent of jobs there, far above any other EU country. It also features one of the bloc's shortest agreed weekly norms via bargaining.

"The Netherlands moved toward more part-time roles that cut the overall average; yet full-time weeks still hover near 40 hours," Spencer told Euronews Business.

Germany, Norway and Denmark sit next at 33.9 hours, so Dutch workers log roughly two hours less than those in the nearest group.

Hours also stay under 35 weekly in Austria at 34.0, Belgium at 34.3 and Finland at 34.7. In these seven nations the typical day falls below seven hours over five days.

Germany logs fewer hours than France, Italy and Spain

Germany holds the shortest week among the EU's four biggest economies at 33.9 hours. Its workers complete 1.7 fewer hours weekly than those in France at 35.6 hours.

Spain at 36.3 hours shows the longest among those four large economies, while Italy at 36.1 hours exceeds the EU mean of 35.9 hours. The spread between Germany and both exceeds two hours each week.

"Shorter hours in Germany partly stem from strong unions and the benefits of collective talks," Spencer said.

Elsewhere, weekly hours reach 38.7 in Poland, 38.2 in Romania, 37.5 in Czechia, 37.4 in Hungary, 35.9 in Switzerland, 35.4 in Sweden and 35.1 in Ireland.

What drives wide hour differences?

Generally Northern and Western European states post shorter weeks than Eastern and Central ones.

Cabrita highlighted time-setting systems, job structures and wider economic patterns as core factors behind national gaps.

Trade unions and bargaining influence

Cabrita explained that nations where unions and bargaining hold greater sway over time limits usually post shorter actual hours.

He noted stronger bargaining also links to reduced overtime and better rule adherence.

Part-time work and self-employment effects

Job makeup, covering distribution across roles, fields, statuses and contract forms, matters greatly too.

Cabrita added that higher part-time shares tend to shorten average hours.

Self-employed people, who often control their own schedules, typically work longer than salaried staff, especially when they hire others.

Economic makeup counts as well. The balance of sectors in an economy can shift averages since some fields demand longer schedules.

Hours differ sharply by sector

Skilled farm, forestry and fishery roles show the longest EU week at 42 hours, followed by managers at 40.6 hours and armed forces at 39.4 hours.

At the low end, elementary jobs average the shortest week at 31.8 hours, then clerical support at 34.0 hours and service plus sales at 34.5 hours.
