I value my experience raising sons. My three boys keep conversations lively with topics like superheroes, foes, and electronic games. Warm months bring outdoor clashes that last until evening meals. Shared viewing sessions loop through Star Wars, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings series without end. Activity fills every hour.

Although youthful noise has given way to phrases like "Bro! That's sus," I notice during family dinners that I stand apart as the single woman present.

Their common expressions highlight how I differ as the only female, especially in key aspects of life.

This awareness led me to seek a dedicated area for myself.

I sought a personal area - separate from the boys

Over recent years I have entered midlife, a phase where many women who have cared for others question their true identity and sense of self.

I desired a tranquil spot to consider such matters, including what womanhood means now.

Space proved limited. Back in 2019 I converted an unused upper room into an office for work and creativity. When the health crisis arrived, my husband shifted to home-based work for years. That office turned into his daily station.

With bedrooms taken, I placed a desk in the main living area. Yet the open spot drew nonstop visits from my husband, the boys, the dog, and the cat that often appeared on video meetings.

I required quiet. I required feminine surroundings.

Out of choices, I looked to the attic. Part of it had been completed, though never used for daily living. We had filled it quickly upon moving in while I was far along in pregnancy, then closed it off.

I cleared the attic to create room for myself

I went up the tight stairs and looked around. A Kaizen idea came to mind: moving a mountain happens one stone at a time.

I breathed deeply and chose to shape this into my own feminine space.

One stone at a time, I told myself while removing each box, folder, container, and sheet of paper. Usable items went to charity. For keepsakes I followed a magazine suggestion and took photos before letting go, even as tears fell. Small shoes from earlier years went into a large trash bag.

Weeks passed until the large pile became a modest mound, then scattered stacks, and finally an empty room ready for use.

Planning the space from within

I saw that most of my years had involved shared rooms. As a child I shared with my sister. Later came roommates, then life with my husband. The chance to shape a space that matched the woman I am growing into felt powerful.

While planning the layout I thought about the traits that define me. A cairn came to mind, built stone by stone with purpose.

One stone - meditator: a window spot holding pillows, mats, incense, and bowls for sound.

One stone - writer and reader: a cozy corner for books and notebooks.

One stone - independent worker: a white glass desk shaped like an L for my computer.

One stone - mindful person: walls with art, positive words, and symbols of progress.

I now enjoy my feminine retreat

A notice on the attic door states, "The Zen Den - Meditation in Progress, Please Do Not Disturb."

I hang it when I want silence for meditation, reading, writing, online meetings, crafting, folding paper art, or simple rest.

After years I finally have a place that shows the woman I am becoming. My inner thoughts come through clearly again.

Only the cat enters without pause, and he receives special allowance.
