Mounted troops from the US Army Caisson Detachment carry out one of the armed forces' most revered duties by moving deceased military personnel to their burial sites within Arlington National Cemetery. A casket rests on a caisson wagon and is pulled across the grounds by three soldiers, where each one mounts a single horse while leading a second using the right hand.

Numerous participants begin with minimal or zero prior knowledge of handling horses. Chosen for their calm demeanor, self-control, and physical condition, they first finish a 12-week introductory horsemanship program and then proceed to six weeks of higher-level training.

The Caisson Detachment resumed operations in 2025 following an almost two-year pause. An inquiry had linked several horse fatalities to poor hygiene in their stables.

To improve the program, the Army brought in equestrian expert Chester Weber, who comes from the Campbell's Soup family wealth. He gathered top equestrian specialists and offered his family's Florida breeding facility for the advanced sessions. This phase concludes with a validation exam required for all soldiers to qualify for actual funeral duties.
