WestJet, Canada’s second largest airline, has reached a tentative agreement with its flight attendants to conclude the strike that triggered hundreds of flight cancellations and left thousands of passengers stranded.

The union representing the flight attendants announced Monday that the accord, if ratified, will acknowledge the pre-flight duties performed by cabin crew members.

The union, CUPE 8125, confirmed that flight attendants are set to resume duties now that the strike has ended, though the tentative agreement must still undergo a ratification vote.

WestJet canceled 495 flights on Sunday, disrupting travel across Canada during a major holiday weekend.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees represents the 4,400 cabin crew at the airline.

“This tentative agreement represents meaningful progress,” CUPE 8125 President Alia Hussain said in a statement. “It evolves the flight credit system by recognizing more of the work cabin crew are required to perform and with general increases to compensation for that work.”

The deal follows the cancellation of trips for 250,000 travelers, according to WestJet. Some passengers faced difficulties securing lodging while stranded, while others could not easily rebook their flights.

Prior to the strike, WestJet offered a proposal featuring a 13% wage increase in October, annual increases of 2.5% each January over the following three years, retroactive pay from last January, extra compensation for all hours worked, and enhancements to additional benefits, according to WestJet. Alia Hussain noted that negotiators pursued a fair deal until the final moments, yet the airline’s offer fell short.

A central point of contention involved compensation for ground duties before departure. The union maintained that some of this work went unpaid, whereas the company asserted that staff received pay via a credit hour system instead of a standard hourly rate.

Last summer, flight attendants at Air Canada, the nation’s largest carrier, disrupted travel for more than 100,000 passengers during peak season over similar concerns about unpaid ground work. That action lasted three days before an agreement was reached.
