As dawn broke over the Caribbean, I walked from my beachfront suite to a lounge chair by the private plunge pool and listened to the rolling waves.

Wrapped in a provided robe, I sipped coffee from the in-room machine and savored the quiet start to a seven-day trip marking my 40th birthday and our fifth wedding anniversary.

The scene felt tranquil and the mood relaxed. The group beside me might have surprised some observers. My mother-in-law sat nearby in a matching robe.

After our daughter arrived, trips became less frequent as parenting took priority. Earlier in life I journeyed often to places such as Singapore and South Africa.

The four of us booked an all-inclusive stay in Cancun inside a two-bedroom suite that offered three beds, two baths, and ample separate living space.

The layout prevented any sense of crowding, and the central living area ensured privacy throughout the week.

The setup allowed a balance of shared moments and personal time

We selected the Hilton Cancun Mar Caribe for its family focus. Days were spent at the splash pool, rooftop pool, or private plunge pool with our daughter.

We used the resort kids club for crafts and play and attended evening entertainment together.

Some meals were enjoyed as a group at the buffet while other evenings my husband and I dined alone while our daughter and her grandmother ate or played in the suite.

This gave them quality time and let us celebrate our anniversary as a couple.

We also visited the spa for hydrotherapy that featured a sauna, steam room, cold plunge, hot tub, and sensory pool.

Although my mother-in-law handled drop-offs at the kids club, we arranged a separate spa session for her as well.

The experience proved enjoyable for everyone involved

At times the arrangement felt unconventional and reminded us of staying in a childhood home with extra company nearby.

Certain private moments turned into group events, yet the shared beach views during in-room meals prepared by others quickly eased any tension.

Including my mother-in-law and daughter on the trip was unusual for some observers, but it provided peace of mind while allowing us to travel and celebrate.
