Shortly before turning 80, my wife Susan gained admission to a master's course at the University of Cambridge in England.

This marks another academic achievement for her, yet earning a qualification from this renowned university represents a rare chance.

Following this goal has presented real hurdles. Finishing the degree in nine months appears extremely demanding, and we have shifted temporarily from our residence in British Columbia.

Although Susan originated from the UK, she is treated as an overseas learner, with costs reaching many thousands of dollars.

My task remains to assist her through this major endeavor.

Reduced earnings mean I now handle every domestic chore

Both Susan and I maintained steady employment, frequently working through weekends.

Following years overseeing nonprofit groups, I shifted to independent writing while we ran a thriving dog-walking service. Susan instructed piano students across Vancouver for decades.

Now my wife devotes herself fully to academics. Since I hold only a visitor visa in the UK, employment options stay severely restricted and local work is unavailable.

Pensions and savings exist, yet expenses from moving and tuition have exceeded expectations.

With limited ability to work here, I intended to read extensively and complete a memoir in progress. Instead, daily life has turned routine as I function mainly as a home-based spouse.

I prepare meals, maintain the residence, purchase supplies, and handle washing while avoiding damage to delicate items. I manage waste disposal, collect and return library materials, and organize appointments in my schedule.

These tasks were previously shared, yet they now fall almost solely to me as she concentrates on coursework.

I also review and edit her papers while serving as a sounding board for concepts. During peak stress, I simply listen without interruption.

My routine centers on her timetable, placing personal aims on hold.

Feeling out of place in Cambridge, though a fresh pursuit offers relief

Soon I discovered I hold no clear role within Cambridge. This awareness started at the nearby college fitness center attached to our temporary student lodging.

Susan's access card grants entry, but my partner version does not, limiting workouts to times when she joins. Adding to the issue, the same card fails to release the exit door, risking isolation if alone inside.

Cambridge prioritizes students and staff, leaving me barred from numerous venues and activities such as complimentary performances or talks held in restricted college spaces.

Most challenging has been the social disconnect, as local interactions begin with questions about my studies.

Responding that I accompany Susan quickly halts discussion, so I now reply with a light remark about being her guest while pursuing writing. This often helps connect with her peers.

After several months the absence of purpose led to deep dissatisfaction. Susan remains absorbed in her work, so expecting her to resolve it felt unfair.

On reaching 70, I devised my own answer by starting flight training.

Lessons occur nearby, yet they underscore my constrained situation.

Sessions must align with her commitments, and without a vehicle I rely on others for transport to the airfield located 45 minutes away.

The activity separates me from Susan and draws from limited funds, creating unease.

Despite enjoying flights above the countryside, reminders persist that our presence serves her objectives.

Even at the airfield, encounters involve university retirees or club members, leaving me outside both circles.

These short-term strains prove worthwhile to fulfill her aspirations

We have long backed each other's interests, which strengthened our partnership, yet this setup has tested us.

The period remains finite. Upon returning to Canada after her graduation, I can resume writing and she can teach again.

Financial pressure will ease, allowing reconnection with our Canadian network. A more equal sharing of chores should resume.

Hopefully the memoir will reach completion and publication.

That project examines my mother's experience supporting my father. Similar to my current position, she lacked paid work and resources while managing the home and family.

She devoted herself to our well-being. In parallel, I am sacrificing aspects of my life to advance Susan's goal.
