Current advice on raising children often recommends cutting back on praise. I see it differently.

Nothing fully readies you to parent a 2-year-old. Toddlers show growing independence and speech skills along with big feelings. I know this well since one lives with us.

These fast changes often lead kids to test limits and throw fits. For us this created challenges with our son's conduct. We made progress by using behavior-specific praise that clearly highlights good actions we notice. It can feel tough sometimes yet the payoff is clear.

Praise matters greatly

At home I learned our praise must go beyond a simple good job. We now say things like I appreciated how you put toys away after play. The floor looks so neat now.

Putting the plan to work

One key to success has been focusing on a single behavior at a time so our efforts stay sharp.

We first tried it to end our 2-year-old jumping on our bed. Most nights he would reach our room and start bouncing. It looked sweet at first but grew worse when he refused to leave. We often carried him back sparking bedtime meltdowns.

After naming the target behavior we restated the rule. We then praised him for getting off when asked with words like I loved how you stopped jumping when we asked. We also praised calm entries without jumping. We spoke happily gave a hug and walked him to his room. Over time as a 3-year-old the problem ended.

Medicine time another past struggle also improved. When sick we mix the dose in a drink he picks and praise each big sip. When he finishes we cheer loudly lift him up and celebrate. He enjoys every moment. Stress around twice-daily doses for ten days dropped. He feels proud and shows us his success.

We met some hurdles

This single method does not solve every issue. Healthy 3-year-olds sometimes ignore requests. That is normal for these three-nagers. Still when we spot a key behavior to change we add praise to our routines. So far we have used it at meals during rides and on store trips.

I wish we had learned this earlier because daily life would have been simpler. Luckily our youngest has now reached toddler stage. Raising children is tough so the right tools matter. They ease things for everyone and we learn when to apply each one.

Praise has become central to our style and our son now copies it. The other night at dinner my wife said she finished eating and he answered good job mama on finishing your dinner. That moment brought us real joy.
