The typical household income nationwide hovers near $83,000, with amounts higher or lower based on residence. Which states rank highest in earnings overall?

WalletHub conducted research using three income factors to assess states: yearly average for the top 5 percent, yearly average for the bottom 20 percent, and median household income across the full population.

The rankings produced some unexpected results. States frequently linked to billionaires such as New York, California, and Florida did not secure the leading position.

WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo noted that income gaps in New York prevented it from claiming the top rank. Although the highest earners do well, middle-income residents earn less in comparison.

Regarding median yearly income, which reflects middle-class earnings, New York sits slightly above the national norm at $96,000, Lupo explained to Business Insider.

California just made the top 15 despite its reputation for celebrities and executives. Lupo suggested that departures among top earners may have affected its placement.

High-wealth residents continue to leave California for states with lower taxes such as Texas, Florida, and Tennessee, which drives much of the shift, Lupo added.
