Parenting in America demands not only time, affection, and dedication but also a substantial financial commitment, which differs markedly by state.

An April LendingTree analysis determined that raising a child through age 18 costs American parents about $303,418 on average. Each year, families allocate 21.9% of their earnings to these expenses, down marginally from 22.6% in the firm's prior 2025 research.

State-to-state variations exist, but childcare for working hours consistently escalates as the dominant outlay for families.

"Last year's figures indicated that in 45 states plus DC, childcare for two children typically surpasses mortgage payments," noted Sandra Bishop, senior research director at Child Care Aware of America, a nonprofit aiding families in securing affordable care, in a 2025 Business Insider interview.

Bishop highlighted this as a persistent issue. Since tracking began in 2000, childcare has ranked as a primary family burden, with prices climbing annually per Child Care Aware data.

"Staff wages account for 70 to 80% of childcare operations," Bishop explained. "Rising living expenses drive up care costs accordingly."

The LendingTree report assessed young child expenses in areas like housing, groceries, and travel by comparing two-person households with and without children. For daycare and clothing, it used state-specific yearly averages.

Researchers drew from the US Census Bureau's American Community Survey, Bureau of Labor Statistics consumer data, Child Care Aware's Price of Care, IRS records, and more to estimate costs per state.

Listed below are yearly costs for raising a young child in each state (plus Washington, DC), ranked from 51 (cheapest) to 1 (priciest).

51. Mississippi

Annual average cost of raising a child: $17,148

Annual average day care costs: $7,696

Average food costs: $1,842

Mississippi claims the top spot as America's most affordable state for child-rearing in 2026, boosted by the nation's lowest daycare rates.

Families here also enjoy some of the smallest expenses for clothing, groceries, and health coverage, holding yearly totals well under the US average.

The 18-year projection ranks fourth-lowest nationally at $208,621.

50. Alabama

Annual cost of raising a child: $18,019

Annual day care costs: $8,632

Food costs: $1,923

Alabama secures second place for low child-rearing costs, with daycare tied for the second-cheapest nationwide.

Its leading tax credit or exemption further reduces the burden for parents.

Alabama families devote 16.7% of income to child costs, seventh-lowest across the US.

Affordability in South Dakota stems mainly from daycare costs matching Alabama's for second-lowest in the nation.
