The US-Iran conflict now past four months keeps attracting worldwide investor focus while shaping markets and sectors. After strikes on Tuesday night the US president declared the memorandum of understanding signed last month to halt fighting is no longer valid. At the NATO summit in Turkey Trump said he would not engage Tehran further. He permitted talks to continue yet voiced little hope they would deliver results.

Furthermore the United States reinstated sanctions on Iranian oil exports after attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz although Iran has not claimed responsibility.

The end of the truce sparked a sharp rise in oil prices from levels near prewar figures. Brent crude reached a two-week peak.

Meanwhile the US dollar rose on safe-haven buying to its strongest level in nearly a week. Markets also watched for the June 17-18 FOMC minutes the first under Warsh. The EUR USD rate stayed near 1.14 close to its weakest point in almost a year. USD JPY advanced for a fourth session to its highest since July 2. Rising oil prices revived inflation worries pressuring Japan which depends on Middle East imports and weighing on the yen. Markets therefore monitor the chance of intervention as Japan's Finance Minister said authorities stand ready to act.

Climbing oil prices also pressured equities producing broad losses in US stocks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell below 53000 while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 declined 0.6 percent and 0.4 percent.

Markets now await the next steps. Trump's comments may signal full collapse of diplomacy or merely a short pause in talks. Either path will affect the two economies and wider financial markets. For oil even if prices ease soon the underlying situation is unlikely to shift much. The crisis has already disrupted energy flows and created a severe inventory shortage.
