New CPI figures reveal annual inflation hit 3.8% in April, the fastest pace since 2023.
Surging energy costs tied to the Iran war are driving up consumer expenses.
Gasoline price increases are hitting lower-income households harder than affluent ones.

U.S. annual inflation accelerated beyond forecasts, as the consumer price index rose 3.8% in April compared to a year earlier. Analysts had anticipated a 3.7% gain, making this the steepest inflation rate since 2023.

The CPI advanced 0.6% from March, aligning with expectations and cooling from the prior month's 0.9% jump.

The fresh inflation surge is pinching household budgets and exceeding wage gains. Real earnings declined 0.5% over the month and 0.3% for the year.

Core CPI, excluding fluctuating food and energy, climbed 2.8% year over year in April, surpassing the 2.7% projection and February's 2.6% rise. From March, core prices increased 0.4%, topping the 0.3% forecast and prior 0.2% gain.

Energy prices soared 17.9% annually, the largest leap since September 2022. Gasoline specifically jumped 28.4% year over year, while energy costs rose 3.8% month over month - milder than March's 10.9% surge.

AAA figures show average gas prices reaching about $4.50, up from under $3 at February's end when the Iran war erupted. These pump prices are prompting varied responses: lower-income families are curbing usage more sharply, while wealthier ones continue largely unaffected.

"Higher-income households trimmed real gas consumption only slightly and ramped up spending sharply from 2023 levels," a Federal Reserve Bank of New York analysis stated, drawing on data through March. "Lower-income households, by comparison, boosted spending far less and slashed consumption more - possibly through carpooling or public transit options."

Elevated gas costs are also dampening economic morale. The University of Michigan's preliminary May consumer sentiment index plunged to a record low of 48.2.

"Middle East events are unlikely to improve sentiment substantially until supply snarls clear and energy prices ease," remarked Joanne Hsu, director of the consumer surveys.

CME FedWatch tool reflects traders pricing in over 90% odds of unchanged interest rates at the mid-June meeting - the inaugural one under a new Federal Reserve chair.

"Inflation moving the wrong way alongside a resilient job market makes near-term rate cuts improbable, and rate increases next year could enter the picture," observed Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer at Northlight Asset Management.

Kevin Warsh is slated for confirmation as successor to Jerome Powell.

"The Federal Reserve's fundamental role is to cultivate economic conditions where American families and businesses flourish - stable prices, a robust job market, and dependable financial system," Powell noted during April's Federal Open Market Committee press conference. "Every choice we make - on interest rates, regulations, supervision, or other matters - advances that mission."
