US Army leaders are working to eliminate decades-old technology barriers that have prevented weapons, sensors, and command systems from sharing information easily, an essential move as the service seeks faster battlefield decisions.

A recent Project Jailbreak hackathon brought leading defense companies together with the Army to link counter-drone systems, air and missile defenses, command platforms, drones, uncrewed systems, and other weapons so they could communicate using common standards.

Changes were implemented quickly and are already reaching soldiers, including units deployed in the Middle East.

"If you are not a technologist, consider your everyday devices," said Alex Miller, the Army's chief technology officer. "Imagine if every accessory - light bulbs, toasters, TVs - used a different connection method. Your toaster would not fit the outlet, forcing you to hunt for a special adapter."

This situation has persisted in the Army for years, making soldiers the manual "integration point" between systems, Miller noted. Such an approach fails when troops are cold, tired, wet, and hungry during extended operations. Personnel had to enter data by hand for decisions, wasting time switching among incompatible tools.

The delays hinder timely decisions when speed is vital.

The Army's updated method draws from its commercial software practices for the new command and control system and insights gained from operations in Ukraine.

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll described the hackathon's inspiration as a visit to Germany where he observed Ukraine's integration of drones, sensors, and weapons into its Delta battle management program.

"A lightbulb went off," Driscoll said. "Everything seen in the prior 16 months lacked the integration, simplicity, or effectiveness needed by the warfighter. Immediate action was required."

Participating firms included Anduril, Boeing, General Dynamics, L3Harris, Leidos, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Palantir, Perennial Autonomy, and RTX. Their engineers collaborated with Army personnel to examine system technologies and establish interoperability.

Although some vendors had connected systems previously, this marked the first Army-led effort at this scale to address older technical standards.

"We limited our partners by classifying systems at the start, which blocks modern development, and by requiring direct interfaces with outdated standards instead of new technology," Miller explained.

Some solutions have already reached troops in the Middle East. Miller stated the remaining updates should deploy within 30 days. Additional hackathons will cover long-range precision fires and other weapons, while new acquisitions will follow these compatibility practices.

"This forms the foundation," said Brent Ingraham, assistant Army secretary for acquisition, logistics, and technology. "Beyond this integrated air and missile defense sprint, we will apply similar steps for fires, ground vehicles, and intelligence platforms to maintain backward compatibility."

Over the past year the Army has pursued rapid changes by fielding new weapons, adopting commercial software methods, and reducing data silos. A key effort is Next Generation Command and Control, the service's updated warfighting software.

NGC2 is under continuous development with the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson and the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii. It uses open architecture so tools from various vendors integrate more readily, speeding data flow and adding automated features such as ammunition estimation.

Army leaders emphasize that future conflicts will demand technology updated rapidly, with streamlined links between weapons and systems plus artificial intelligence to match operational pace and ease the data burden on soldiers.
