The crypto market opened the week with two notable transactions that drew considerable attention from investors. A Bitcoin whale inactive for seven years suddenly moved coins valued at roughly $188 million. At the same time, the U.S. government transferred nearly $300 million in crypto holdings to the Coinbase Prime platform.

Neither case shows clear signs that the assets are headed for immediate sale. Still, large-scale movements in the crypto space always invite close examination by market participants.

A dormant whale inactive since Bitcoin traded near $6,500

Blockchain analytics firm Arkham reported that wallet "356my" transferred 2,931 Bitcoin on Sunday, valued at approximately $188 million, after seven years of inactivity since 2019.

The original deposit occurred when Bitcoin traded around $6,500. With prices now near $63,000, the position reflects nearly a tenfold increase in value.

The coins moved to a fresh wallet rather than directly to an exchange, yet the sudden reactivation after years of dormancy still generated widespread investor interest.

Why investors track whales closely

Crypto investors holding large Bitcoin quantities are known as whales. Small transfers by retail participants rarely affect prices, but movements of hundreds of millions prompt questions about potential selling pressure.

CryptoQuant data indicates that in 2026 nearly all Bitcoin deposits to exchanges originated from large holders, with roughly 99 percent tied to the ten biggest transfers.

Such patterns have historically signaled bearish sentiment, since sizable exchange inflows often precede sales.

Nevertheless, not every transfer leads to liquidation. Many reflect custody changes, new wallet setups, or institutional asset-management activity.

U.S. government shifts nearly $300 million in crypto

The U.S. government executed one of its largest crypto transfers this year. Arkham noted the movement of 3,940 Bitcoin worth about $244 million plus over 30,000 Ethereum tokens valued near $53 million to Coinbase Prime.

The assets stemmed from notable forfeiture cases including BTC-e, the Ryan Farace matter, and a money-laundering probe linked to a former Oracle employee. The transfer again fueled speculation about possible sales.

Timing added further interest. In March 2025 President Donald Trump issued an executive order directing that seized Bitcoin join a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve instead of being sold.

Investors therefore questioned whether the government had altered its stance upon seeing hundreds of millions moved to Coinbase Prime.

Experts advise caution, noting Coinbase Prime offers custody, asset management, and financing services beyond trading, so the transfer may represent routine operations.

Despite these moves, the U.S. government remains among the largest crypto holders globally. Linked wallets are estimated to contain roughly $20.6 billion in digital assets, including about 325,000 Bitcoin, 28,000 Ethereum, 146 million USDT, plus hundreds of Wrapped Bitcoin and other tokens.
