Ukrainian troops require more complete support packages for their ground robots to aid frontline operations, rather than additional designs, according to two unit leaders who spoke with Business Insider.

The Ukrainian sector now overflows with numerous uncrewed ground vehicles, known as UGVs, which are affordable tracked machines deployed in place of personnel for hazardous tasks.

"We have a lot of platforms now. We have a lot of different UGVs," Andrii Kushnierov, a platoon leader with Ukraine's 59th Assault Brigade, told Business Insider.

Kushnierov noted that while developers continue to create fresh platforms, Ukraine truly requires practical answers such as affordable UGVs paired with supporting elements like communications and instruction.

A full package would cover the UGV itself along with instruction, customization, fixes, upkeep, and data analysis, Kushnierov explained, stressing that simply building a machine falls short.

He mentioned that earlier in the conflict his unit obtained 40 or 50 assorted Ukrainian and imported UGVs. Just one arrived combat-ready; the others needed adjustments. He indicated this pattern continues.

Four years ago when Russia's large-scale invasion began, only a handful of Ukrainian firms produced UGVs.

Today nearly 300 companies manufacture 550 distinct UGV variants for roles including supply transport, casualty removal, and mine clearance, Andrii Hrytseniuk, CEO of the Ukrainian state-backed innovation platform Brave1, told Business Insider.

This rapid expansion shows Ukraine's strong effort to deploy UGVs in fighting. The nation ordered 25,000 units in the first half of 2026, double the prior year total, with plans for 50,000 by the end of the year.

Ukrainian UGVs have completed over 50,000 missions since January, and leaders aim for robots to manage all logistics as risks to human troops rise. The deadly forward area under constant drone surveillance is widening, complicating resupply efforts.

Ukrainian firms keep creating fresh UGV designs and updating older ones to boost combat endurance. Grek, a UGV company commander in the 21st Unmanned Systems Kraken Regiment, said these updates deserve attention.

Yet he told Business Insider that given the existing range of UGVs, focusing on further improvements to current systems and standardizing parts and modules would prove more useful.

Grek explained that standardization reduces time spent on buying and fixing equipment, which directly boosts combat results. It also speeds up training and raises operator skill levels.

For teams operating in one battlefield zone, shared standards could enhance cooperation. If units employ identical UGVs, on-site repairs simplify since spares match, Grek said. A nearby allied robot breakdown could then receive quick help from his group.

"There are situations when systems fail during missions, and allied units are nearby. In such cases, we support and help each other," he said.

Ukrainian personnel and officials have praised UGVs in action, noting logistics would stall without them. The machines are low-cost, with some priced around 2,000 dollars, and disposable since many last only a few missions.

Kushnierov said UGVs deliver the greatest benefit when carrying ammunition or fuel instead of people. Any vehicle with such loads entering zones thick with Russian drones faces likely destruction. In certain sectors this outcome is nearly certain.

"You will not survive," Kushnierov said. "100%."
