Anti-drone netting has grown widespread along Ukraine's roadways, with this year's total installations sufficient to stretch the full north-south distance across Florida.

Ukraine's defense ministry announced on Saturday that 822 kilometers, equivalent to roughly 510 miles, of anti-drone protection have been placed along frontline roads during the current year.

The ministry noted that 131 miles of this heavy-duty mesh, designed to snare attacking quadcopters, were deployed during May.

Florida measures approximately 447 miles when traveling from its northern border with Georgia down to Key West at the southern tip.

The ministry emphasized in its statement that maintaining secure logistics near the front line stays a top focus, with ongoing efforts to shield critical routes.

Ukraine's State Special Transport Service constructs wooden or metal frames beside roads and hangs mesh across them to create extended tunnel-like coverings.

Much of the material comes from repurposed agricultural or fishing nets, frequently provided through donations by Western partners. These setups prove useful for snagging the rotors of small attack drones and serve as an affordable final safeguard against the conflict's primary threat.

Both Ukrainian and Russian troops first applied netting to shield armored vehicles before expanding use in late 2023 to fixed sites, especially after unjammable fiber-optic drones reduced reliance on electronic warfare.

Russia pioneered large-scale mesh tunnels on controlled highways, with early images from spring 2025 capturing coverage in Donetsk region roads.

Ukraine has also committed substantial resources to this approach. The defense ministry reported last month a daily installation rate of 5.2 miles, an increase from the prior 2.4 miles per day.

Ministry figures indicate at least 720 miles of such netting over the past two years, comparable to the span from New York City to Chicago.

Although effective, the nets have limits. Successive drone strikes may open gaps in the mesh, permitting explosive drones to pass through and await targets.
