WASHINGTON -- President Donald Trump on Wednesday revealed a fresh perspective on inflation by declaring his affection for the trend in his own phrasing.

Confronted with data indicating the consumer price index rose 4.2 percent over the prior year, the president adopted an upbeat stance toward the development. He avoided labeling the matter a partisan fabrication or asserting success in reducing living expenses as in past statements.

Following the official announcement that price growth reached its peak since April 2023, Trump instead commended the figures directly.

"You know what I really love?" Trump remarked. "I love the inflation."

The comment stood out because voters have identified economic conditions as a primary worry before the November midterms and have rated the president poorly on the topic. Democrats moved swiftly to share the statement across platforms after it aired.

Trump had promised during his 2024 campaign to address inflation rapidly, yet he now attributes elevated costs entirely to energy impacts from the Iran conflict. He asserted on Wednesday that solutions are emerging due to an undisclosed military effort that transported 100 million barrels of oil past the Strait of Hormuz, a key route handling 20 percent of worldwide oil shipments blocked since late February.

"Trump really said, 'I love the inflation.' On camera. For all of America to hear," Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer posted on X. "His contempt for you knows no bounds."

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries added on X that the remark showed "We finally found something that Donald Trump loves as much as he loves himself."

Rep. Emilia Sykes, D-Ohio, questioned Energy Secretary Chris Wright during a hearing on whether he shared the sentiment about inflation.

"Do you love inflation?" Sykes inquired.

"I love ending Iran's ability to have a nuclear weapon," Wright replied before acknowledging under further questioning, "No, I would prefer lower inflation."

When pressed on the president's words, Wright described him as "an entertaining, hyperbolic guy who's done tremendous leadership."

Trump linked the oil deliveries to the drop in prices below 90 dollars per barrel from over 110 dollars in early April.

"I'm just announcing today for the first time, but we've been taking out millions of barrels of oil, millions of barrels every night," Trump stated.

The president noted on social media that the effort started last month and enabled over 100 MILLION Barrels of Oil to pass through the Strait into open markets, with more than 200 commercial ships completing safe transit. No independent verification of the volume was available, and the extent of U.S. military involvement remained unclear.

For context, roughly 20 million barrels moved daily through the route before the conflict, suggesting the claimed shipments equaled about five days of typical volume.

The White House noted in response to the inflation report that select costs such as new vehicles, prescription drugs, and auto insurance declined from April to May. Yet combined with wage changes, the overall data signaled reduced purchasing power for consumers.

"President Trump has consistently maintained that oil and gas prices - and thus overall inflation - will plummet once the Iran situation is resolved, and the administration will continue pushing our affordability agenda to enable Americans to keep more of their hard-earned money," White House spokesman Kush Desai said in an email.

Markets reacted with caution to the assertions about easing prices through tanker movements, which coincided with U.S. airstrikes on Iran and retaliatory actions from Tehran.

U.S. crude oil futures rose about 4 percent on Wednesday to close near 92 dollars per barrel.
