This 15,000-square-kilometer zone of coastal towns, hilltop settlements, and inland mountains sits at the toe of the Italian peninsula. It features varied terrain, a relaxed rhythm of life, and an authentic local vibe.

My father grew up in this area between the Ionian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea, so I have returned more than eight times.

Exploring its coasts, ranges, or small villages always reveals how natural and genuine the region remains. I consider it one of Italy's most overlooked areas.

The region stays relatively quiet throughout the year compared to other Italian spots. Even in summer it avoids feeling overcrowded.

In places like the cliffside town of Tropea I meet other visitors, yet many villages bring encounters only with residents.

The main airport is Lamezia Terme International Airport, though most long flights from the US land in Rome, Milan, or Naples. From there a short domestic flight or train reaches Calabria.

Renting a car is wise because public transport between towns can prove limited and slow.

The coastline stands out as a major attraction

Calabria offers roughly 740 kilometers of shoreline, with several beaches worth special mention.

Tropea ranks as the best-known spot on the Tyrrhenian coast, marked by steep cliffs above turquoise water and broad pale sand. A historic town overlooks the beach, creating one of the most memorable views.

A short drive leads to Capo Vaticano with its coves and lookouts over water that changes from deep blue to bright aquamarine. Briatico nearby feels quiet and residential.

On the Ionian coast, Pietragrande draws swimmers and snorkelers to rocky outcrops and clear water. Twenty minutes north, Catanzaro Lido features a long beach with clubs, eateries, and a lively promenade.

Small shops and eateries shape the local character

Countless gelaterias, family businesses, and restaurants serving generational recipes fill Calabria.

In Tropea, Vecchio Granaio prepares regional favorites such as fileja pasta with spicy nduja sausage. Deodato Lounge Bistrot offers a refined meal with a view of the Tyrrhenian Sea, especially striking at sunset.

On the Ionian side in Catanzaro Lido, Lido De Fazio, known locally as Mastro Ciccio, serves straightforward, affordable dishes at the beach club.

Beyond natural beauty, Calabria holds rich heritage with churches, castles, and archaeological sites.

The Riace Bronzes, two fifth-century Greek statues found in the Ionian Sea in 1972, can be viewed at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Reggio Calabria.

Every visit feels like a return home

Calabria does not replace popular sites like the Amalfi Coast or Florence; it delivers its own unique experience. A stay of at least one week allows time to explore both the coast and inland towns.

Favorite memories include wandering the striking beaches, tasting spicy nduja and fresh seafood, and visiting relatives in Vibo Valentia in the western part of the region.

Above all, the people of Calabria draw me back. They rank among the warmest and most generous I have met. No matter where I travel, this corner of Italy calls me home each arrival.
