TOKYO -- Toyota posted Tuesday a near doubling of earnings for the fiscal first quarter, driven by firm demand in the U.S. and India together with supportive currency movements that lifted overall performance.

The Japanese carmaker behind the Prius hybrid and Lexus premium lineup posted a 1.48 trillion yen ($9.4 billion) net profit for the April-June stretch, rising from 841 billion yen in the corresponding quarter last year.

Sales for the quarter climbed 10 percent from a year earlier to reach 13.5 trillion yen ($85 billion).

A weaker yen lifts the worth of foreign earnings for major Japanese exporters such as Toyota Motor Corp. The U.S. dollar stood near 145 yen in the fiscal first quarter of 2025 yet reached roughly 160 yen during the same stretch this year.

The dollar trades near 158 yen following coordinated U.S.-Japan market action taken last week during the fiscal second quarter.

The helpful currency shift contributed 345 billion yen ($2.2 billion) to Toyota quarterly operating profit for the April-June interval.

The company is basing its full-year outlook on a rate of 160 yen per dollar.

Chief Officer Takanori Azuma noted Toyota delivered 2.39 million vehicles worldwide in the quarter just closed, down slightly from 2.41 million units a year earlier.

Still the firm anticipates higher full-year volume of 9.7 million vehicles versus 9.595 million in the prior fiscal year.

Azuma observed continued strong interest in Toyota hybrids across key markets including the U.S., where the Camry sedan and RAV4 sport utility vehicle are moving well.

Toyota intends to expand hybrid and hybrid-battery output through 2030, Azuma added, which should help lower costs. Electric vehicle deliveries are also performing solidly, he noted.

Top sellers in India included the Urban Cruiser and Innova Hycross, while the Yaris continued to perform well in Thailand and Europe.

Recent political tensions in the Middle East have affected Japanese automakers that depend on the now largely closed Strait of Hormuz for shipments. Toyota indicated it is addressing such issues by exploring alternate shipping paths.

A further concern stems from the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Kumamoto in southwestern Japan on July 28.

Toyota operates facilities in the region, and output has stopped at its Tahara plant for five days through Friday, followed by a summer shutdown unrelated to the quake, keeping production lower through month end.

Toyota forecasts a 3.25 trillion yen ($20.6 billion) profit for the full fiscal year ending March 2027, below the 3.85 trillion yen ($24 billion) earned in the prior fiscal year.

Yearly sales are projected at 54 trillion yen ($342 billion), above the 50.7 trillion yen recorded in the fiscal year that ended in March.

Toyota shares declined nearly 2 percent in Tokyo trading once the earnings figures were released.
