Dave Lewis held the qualifications needed to win roles at leading Big Tech employers. Yet after two layoffs in three years, he paused to assess how he could contribute to the shifting tech sector.

Lewis worked ten years at Google before facing a layoff at Amazon, returning briefly, and then moving to Microsoft only to be let go once more.

Following the latest cut, the Montana resident reflected on his next chapter. Much of his career had involved frequent travel, including his most recent sales position at Microsoft, and he sought more time with family at home.

Lewis, now in his thirties, also aimed for sustained professional advancement. With AI transforming the sector, he recognized the challenge of selecting the right direction.

He repeatedly asked himself how to direct his search toward the coming five years of industry change rather than the path already traveled.

Over the past year I have interviewed many tech workers in similar situations who were displaced and now face a tough hiring environment. Numerous cuts stemmed from efforts to correct pandemic-era overstaffing and improve efficiency.

Although overall employment shows modest hiring and limited separations, the tech field stands apart. Candidates compete against other laid-off professionals, new graduates, and employed workers seeking fresh roles.

AI looms large throughout. While analysts continue to discuss its precise role in workforce reductions and recruitment, the technology is clearly altering the industry and shaping how professionals like Lewis view long-term prospects.

Reasons for departing Google after ten years

Lewis joined Google in 2012 as a digital media manager, drawn by its leadership position in his field.

During the pandemic he and his wife relocated from New York City to Montana, which complicated matters because key clients had been located near the New York office.

He simultaneously sought fresh responsibilities.

"I handled isolated, intricate tasks rather than broad industry challenges, which is where I excel," he noted.

He concluded that remaining in Montana while securing remote-friendly work would best serve his family. Amazon appeared suitable and offered growth by shifting him from an individual sales contributor position into a wider product strategy role.

In July 2022 Lewis started at Amazon as a product lead. Less than twelve months later he was included in workforce reductions.

Amazon released him then brought him back

Lewis maintained contact with former managers and colleagues who had also been affected and heard about a new team forming. In October 2023 he returned to Amazon as a technical product manager.

"Rejoining differed from an initial hire because existing goodwill and familiarity with my contributions helped," he explained.

Earlier that year Amazon had required corporate staff to be in the office three days weekly. Upon return Lewis anticipated roughly monthly visits to Seattle, with the plan to be reviewed after the first year.

Decision to move from Amazon to Microsoft

Just before completing a year back at Amazon the policy changed to five days in the office.

Lewis understood his remote exception would end. He and his wife considered spending at least a year in Seattle while retaining their Montana home, yet decided it did not suit their family.

At the same time Lewis wanted new professional stimulation. His team had achieved most of its original objectives.

In January 2025, coinciding with Amazon's five-day office rule, Lewis departed for a remote partner sales executive position at Microsoft. The role involved some travel yet provided a new challenge.

Ten months later his position at Microsoft was eliminated. For the second time in under three years he was again seeking employment.

Securing his subsequent position

Lewis possessed sufficient savings to choose his next step carefully. He connected with a former Google colleague who had started the AI startup Emberos, focused on helping companies refine their digital presence for AI-driven search.

Lewis already followed how AI alters online information discovery and soon accepted a full-time role as head of partnerships. The position carries no office mandate, though he anticipates regular travel to the Los Angeles office.

After taking April off to welcome his son, Lewis began full-time work in May.

"The market shifts rapidly each day," he said. "Identify roles that draw on your background, push you to explore new technology, and provide room for lasting advancement."
