Tesla's much-anticipated Roadster made a dramatic debut by soaring off a ramp during a recent event.

At the livestreamed showcase on Thursday evening, the vehicle ascended a curved incline, inverted itself, took flight, rotated, and settled back onto its wheels, seemingly supported by undercarriage thrusters.

"Well, it worked," Elon Musk remarked in the broadcast.

Musk noted that engineers from Tesla and SpaceX worked together on the vehicle, employing compressed air and thrusters for lift. The company also presented a video showing the Roadster accelerating to 60 mph in just 0.81 seconds.

Although questions linger about its road legality, the technology sector is responding with amazement to Musk's latest innovation.

Here are insights from prominent figures in business and tech regarding the updated Roadster.

Jason Calacanis

Angel investor Jason Calacanis described the flying car footage on X as resembling "science fiction" yet authentic in reality. He expressed enthusiasm, pondering the possibilities if the car could sustain flight for extended periods like five, ten, or even thirty minutes.

Gene Munster

Gene Munster, managing partner at Deepwater Asset Management and veteran tech analyst, shared his two main observations from the Roadster event on X. He viewed it as "an engineering flex with no commercial value beyond embarrassing traditional car makers." His second point highlighted Musk's intent to integrate his two public firms, SpaceX and Tesla.

John Carmack

John Carmack, former CTO of Meta's virtual reality division, politely declined interest in the flying car. "That demo involved a non trivial chance of embarrassing failure!" he wrote on X. He added, "I'm only going for the baseline model. At this point in my life, rocket bunny hops are out of my comfort zone."

Marques Brownlee

Tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee, known as MKBHD, expressed doubt over Tesla's assertions about the new Roadster. "They really just got on stage and said this newly designed 4000+ pound car can do flips and go half the speed of sound (380+mph) and will ship in 2028," he wrote on X. "This is a prank, right?"

Alexandr Wang

Meta's chief AI officer, Alexandr Wang, posed one key question after viewing the Roadster demonstration. "wait who the hell was driving the tesla," Wang wrote on X while sharing footage of the car racing along a dark track.

Dan Ives

Dan Ives, analyst at Yorkville Ives and longtime Tesla supporter, described the Roadster reveal as "a statement about where the Tesla and SpaceX engineering stacks are headed together." He called the SpaceX-developed hardware "a small example of the synergies between Tesla and SpaceX." Still, he noted, "The Roadster will not move the volume or revenue needle," but it would "restore the brand halo at the top of the market."

David Marcus

David Marcus, former PayPal president and Meta executive, praised Musk for restoring wonder to technology. "The thing I'm most grateful to Elon for is bringing back an age of wonder and excitement to humanity," Marcus wrote on X while sharing the Roadster demonstration. "That was jaw-dropping awesome! Screams and mouths wide open in the audience. Nuts."
