Taylor Farms confronts a swift public health issue, and communications specialists indicate its recent statements have clouded an already tangled scenario.

The leading food provider announced Sunday that the FDA had withdrawn a positive cyclospora result on its lettuce, labeling it a false positive. The parasite has affected thousands nationwide in recent weeks.

Today the FDA apologized to us, Taylor Farms stated on its website. It added that it had enacted a voluntary recall of select iceberg lettuce items out of caution and based on early input from officials.

Leading with the supposed apology diverted focus from the firm's prior emphasis on consumer protection. The shortcomings of this tactic emerged Monday, as the FDA noted that tracing data still implicates the company's lettuce and advised consumers to keep avoiding the recalled items, some of which reached select Taco Bell locations.

To clarify, this false-positive lab sample does not alter the foundation of the FDA's active outbreak probe or the strong epidemiological evidence backing the current voluntary recall by Taylor Farms, the agency stated on X.

The incident highlights the tricky spot firms encounter when tied to a fast-changing public health event. Communications advisers told Business Insider that while Taylor Farms correctly noted the false positive, it should have stressed safety, openness, and next steps instead.

Anything seen as celebrating vindication risks appearing premature, said Bradley Akubuiro, former chief spokesperson for Boeing amid the 737 Max issues and now a partner at Bully Pulpit International. They have not been cleared yet.

Taylor Farms did not reply to a Business Insider request for comment on its outbreak handling or communications approach.

Kevin Donahue, a crisis communications veteran at Coologee with FDA and recall experience, noted the false positive merited mention but should not have opened the message.

Donahue proposed a stronger statement would move swiftly from the FDA finding to consumer reassurance, perhaps starting with: We are glad the product test proved a false positive. Our main priority stays consumer safety and aiding public health. We remain dedicated to cooperating with the FDA as its investigation proceeds.

Rod Hughes, a crisis communications specialist at Kimball Hughes Public Relations, concurred and noted Taylor Farms managed some outbreak elements well. It promptly conveyed sympathy for the ill, voluntarily withdrew the suspect lettuce, and pledged cooperation with health authorities.

They led with empathy, which is essential in such cases, Hughes said. People suffered, so that must be addressed first.

His main worry was the lack of detail on preventing future outbreaks.

What steps are they taking to fix this? Hughes asked. I do not see that.

He added that firms should generally steer clear of antagonizing regulators, no matter the administration, since those bodies oversee them.

I would not advise poking the FDA, the IRS, or similar agencies, Hughes said. It could return to trouble you when you seek leniency later.

Since the FDA has not verified Taylor Farms' claim of an apology for the false positive, the company now faces a delicate spot, said Evan Nierman, founder of Red Banyan crisis PR firm. By centering the alleged apology, Taylor Farms invited scrutiny over whose account holds true.

It has sparked fresh coverage debating who is correct, he said. You never want to venture out on a limb you cannot retreat from.
