Steve Harvey sees his long career in entertainment, motivational speaking and writing as gifts from God that are closely connected to his charitable work.

"The more God trusts you, the more he will bless you, but he has to trust you with what he is going to give," Harvey told The Associated Press following a recent appearance at the Social Innovation Summit in Atlanta. "And a part of what he is going to give to you is going to require that you take a portion of it and return the favor."

Zeev Klein, CEO of Landmark Ventures and founder of the Social Innovation Summit, noted that Harvey's message carries weight amid many pressing global issues.

"Steve has an extraordinary ability to meet the moment with honesty, empathy, and clarity," Klein said. "He does not just speak to an audience, he connects people in a way that moves conversations forward."

The longtime host of "Family Feud" and star of many films and television programs, Harvey approaches giving back with great commitment, particularly via The Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation, which he launched with his wife. He has also instilled the importance of philanthropy in his children.

I believe I learned that from my mother. She always taught me that God blesses you so you can become a blessing. You must give to others without expecting anything back. It is your duty. When you help someone you do not have the right to decide what they need it for. People might say he will only buy beer or get drunk or high. That is not your concern. If you give with the intent to help, the reward comes back to you.

Those who have never experienced hardship see things differently. They do not understand what it means to struggle. We need to build more understanding among people. You may not have grown up poor, but learning about the challenges many face can change your outlook if you are compassionate. When you ignore their stories you continue to act as if you have always been wealthy. That is the issue we face today.

Most caring parents want their children to have better lives than they did. My father wished for me to enjoy more than he had. They did not want me to face the same struggles. I did the same for my kids. None of them grew up in poverty. Each had a room with its own bathroom. Each had a desk and computer. I provided a lot and sometimes too much, especially for the girls. I just cannot say no to my daughters. That is my weakness. But I taught them they have no right to feel superior to anyone else. They simply won the lottery because I am their father. They did not earn what they have. I told them all: Justice means getting what you deserve. Mercy means not getting what you deserve. Grace means receiving what you do not deserve. My children were born into grace. They did not have to earn it. I did the work. That is how I raised them and why they remain grounded.

It is interesting you asked because I have adjusted the approach over time. The boys arriving at this camp are different now. It is a gentler group being raised today. We used to dive straight into tough lessons. Now we ease them off the bus with a short talk. Over the years we have softened the program. It is a milder camp now. Yet during the five days we still teach them how life operates. There are no participation trophies in real life. If you miss a promotion at work they will not hand you the check anyway.
