Starbucks announced Friday that it will lay off 300 corporate employees and close select U.S. offices as part of its continuing turnaround plan.

No baristas or coffeehouse staff will be impacted, the company emphasized. The reductions target support roles in areas like marketing, human resources and supply chain operations. International corporate staff remain unaffected at this stage, though Starbucks indicated it is assessing its structure abroad.

The firm is also shutting down underutilized offices in Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago and additional locations. The Seattle-based coffee chain recently revealed plans for a new corporate hub in Nashville, Tennessee, expected to create up to 2,000 jobs over five years.

Starbucks anticipates these steps will generate $400 million in restructuring expenses, including $120 million for employee severance packages.

Under Chairman and CEO Brian Niccol, who started in 2024, Starbucks has worked to slash costs and streamline operations. Last year alone, it cut 2,000 corporate jobs and closed hundreds of stores in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

Niccol commented last month that the streamlined setup allows for quicker innovation. Starbucks is pouring resources into its stores to elevate customer experiences, with intentions to refresh 1,000 U.S. locations this year for a more inviting atmosphere. It is also bringing on extra baristas to handle rush hours more efficiently.

Signs of success are emerging. For the January-March quarter, U.S. same-store sales - at outlets open for at least a year - climbed 7%. Niccol dubbed it "the turn in our turnaround."

"Our focus now is on sustaining our momentum and making our results repeatable and durable, all while delivering a healthy cost structure that supports profitable growth," Niccol told investors on a conference call. "It’s how we turn progress into consistent results."
