Electricity Costs Rise 6 Percent in June Following VAT Cut Removal

Electricity contributed notably to the index, climbing 6 percent year over year during a month that ranked as the second warmest recorded, driven by heavier household reliance on cooling devices.

Earlier drops of 5.5 percent in April and 4.3 percent in May had supported the temporary VAT reduction aimed at easing war related strains. Ending that relief helped drive the June rebound, though the Economy Ministry notes overall inflation held steady.

Finance Minister Arcadi España noted on social platform X that the June data underscore the success of government actions. Amid global uncertainty, inflation stayed level and food price growth slowed to 1.9 percent, showing the results of family and business supports plus renewable energy expansion that bolsters economic strength.

First Vice President and Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo stated the numbers prove the response plan continues to shield households from Iran conflict effects and preserve buying power. Officials add that renewable commitments allow gradual removal of temporary supports from a solid base. Food and nonalcoholic beverages eased pressure as their June increase slowed to 1.9 percent, three tenths below the 2.2 percent from May.

Fuel Costs Reflect Short US Iran Truce

The brief ceasefire between the United States and Iran reduced pressure on fuel prices in June, leading to slower rises despite renewed tensions and ongoing limits on Strait of Hormuz traffic.

Petrol advanced 1.3 percent and diesel 14.1 percent per INE data. The government maintained its phased subsidy cuts, though fresh Middle East strains may again affect oil markets.

Housing and Tourism Boost Price Pressures

Housing costs accelerated to 4.7 percent in June from 1.4 percent in May, while transport eased to 5.1 percent. Restaurant and lodging prices climbed sharply, with accommodation jumping 9.3 percent annually.

Madrid led provincial inflation at 3.8 percent, followed by Las Palmas at 3.6 percent. Caceres and Jaen recorded the lowest at 2.2 percent. Among regions, Extremadura showed the smallest price rise at 2.4 percent.
