It was an adjustment from our usual communication

Chaperone reports filled the gap. I pored over group shots of grinning global teens, hunting for my son. Was his smile genuine? Did he seem content? Forming bonds? The images and upbeat notes confirmed his deep immersion in the journey.

Lacking live updates, I missed real-time details like his lunch or mid-afternoon laughs. Everyday instants passed without me - intentionally so. His adventure belonged wholly to him.

He missed taking photos most of all

Post-trip, his top gripe was not missing our chats but lacking a camera. He loathed the barrier to snapping pictures freely. This contemporary itch to record every instant, preserving it digitally, gripped him. Stripped of it, perhaps he retained sharper recollections.

We both learned something from that trip

Far from simple. Early days brought pangs for our round-the-clock digital link. Yet by trip's close, I grasped his gains - and mine.

Much as texts delight me, I cherish knowing he fully inhabited those instants, unplugged. That's a keepsake enduring, text or no.
