After exploring numerous spots across Asia, Central America, and Europe, selecting standouts proves difficult. Yet seven nations continue to captivate long after the trips ended.

Mongolia stands apart from every other destination visited. Arrival in Ulaanbaatar revealed striking architecture blending modern structures with ancient Buddhist temples. The true highlight came in the Gobi Desert, where weeks were spent living off-grid alongside nomadic families amid shifting conditions of fierce winds, intense heat, snow, and subzero temperatures. The isolation and sparse connectivity fostered complete presence in each moment.

Bolivia delivered constant variety and surprise. Days alternated between trekking on foot and soaring via cable cars above the city, an adventure that overcame a personal fear of heights. Traditional attire featuring layered skirts, shawls, and bowler hats added vivid color. La Paz in particular felt raw, lively, and distinct from other South American cities.

Ethiopia impressed with both its people and terrain. Locals ranked among the most welcoming encountered anywhere, while hikes proved extraordinary. Scaling a sheer 1,000-foot cliff barefoot and without safety gear led to the ancient rock church of Abuna Yemata Guh, offering sweeping views. The Danakil Depression, known as Mars on Earth, featured active volcanoes and extreme heat near 90 degrees, yet its striking yellow-green and orange landscapes proved unforgettable.

Guatemala offered dramatic natural beauty. A strenuous trek provided a front-row view of Volcán de Fuego erupting, a sight that remains vivid. Lake Atitlán, ringed by three volcanoes and dotted with peaceful towns offering yoga and local cuisine, provided ideal recovery after the demanding climb.

Nepal belongs on every traveler's list. Kathmandu greeted with heavy rain, yet its vibrant streets and colorful markets shone through. The multiday trek to Annapurna Base Camp culminated in clear skies, a memorable sunrise, and majestic Himalayan vistas after days of uncertain weather.

South Korea proved ideal for solo journeys, especially for women. Streets felt secure and remarkably clean, while shopping and dining reached exceptional levels. Standouts included an iced latte at Malic Coffee in Seoul and beauty finds at Olive Young. The Starfield Library, with its vast open collection of around 50,000 volumes, ranked among the most striking sights seen.

Uzbekistan showcased unmatched cultural layers. Tashkent blended influences from Asia, the Middle East, and Russia. Cuisine ranged from Russian borscht and Middle Eastern pilaf to Uyghur-style lagman noodles. Travel along the historic Silk Road revealed stunning squares and towns that resembled movie sets come to life.
