We now have the opportunity to explore cluttered drawers and old bookshelves in basements. Over the past several years, both of us lost our positions in writing and editing roles. As we keep submitting applications for new opportunities, we stay occupied by visiting estate sales and secondhand shops.

Our family has a long tradition of hunting for bargains at thrift stores and estate sales. Our mother collected items with a talent for spotting valuable antiques. She showed her three daughters the skills needed to uncover gems among discarded goods, including negotiation tips and effective cleaning methods to revive objects.

I have always loved the excitement of discovery, yet I never expected to convert our mutual interest in vintage pieces into an actual company.

Facing simultaneous layoffs

Once we accumulated more inventory, I formalized the effort by creating Travel Far Now Vintage, an online store on Etsy, during 2023.

I manage most operations including packaging, delivery, and finances, while depending on my sister's sharp selection skills. She can enter any sale or shop and locate remarkable vintage finds amid the clutter.

Many duties occupy our schedule from finding items and restoring them to creating listings, shipping packages, handling books, sharing updates, and engaging buyers. The work prevents us from falling into inactivity caused by job loss.

Steadiness matters most. Even as we pursue stable full-time positions, managing the vintage shop keeps us engaged, involved, and interested in the changing market for collectibles.

Fortunately, each day brings variety. There is always a buyer seeking a particular vintage piece that links them to earlier times.

Healing through shared work

Operating a vintage business teaches constant lessons about release and acceptance during times of loss.

The process involves a kind of transformation. By offering discarded items new purpose, I gained greater respect for how quickly moments pass.

I view myself as a keeper of recollections, trading in nostalgia via old objects and the histories they represent.

When a customer contacts me about an old Sunbeam timer, the interest goes beyond the device itself to recalling moments from their early kitchen experiences. These exchanges help me reflect on my own past and find resolution.

Our shop honors our mother, the greatest bargain hunter who passed on her knowledge. While shopping, we often sense her presence guiding us.

She inquires with a sparkle, asking if we recognize an item. We reply that we do and keep looking for more distinctive finds.

Running this small vintage operation with my sister has deepened our connection as we honor our mother's memory. The act of searching provides comfort, and giving new life to old possessions brings further relief.
