Hundreds of Samsung workers across the United States now face a stark choice between relocating more than 2,000 kilometers or departing the firm, as the tech leader transfers its US headquarters from Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, to Plano, Texas. The restructuring touches 739 positions, according to Reuters.

Many impacted staff received offers to move to Texas, while others have already received layoff notices. Samsung has not revealed how many accepted relocation support, how many turned it down, or the final number of roles cut.

The changes mainly involve the consumer electronics unit, covering smartphones, televisions, and household appliances. The transition will unfold in phases and will move a large share of US operations to a region where Samsung already runs additional teams and sites.

Less than a year after the previous move

The announcement arrives less than a year after Samsung shifted its US base to Englewood Cliffs offices. Earlier, operations were based in Ridgefield Park, also in New Jersey.

In June, the company notified employees of plans to transfer operations to Texas. For staff, this involves more than swapping offices. It means either uprooting families to another state or forfeiting their positions.

Samsung explained that concentrating operations in Texas aims to simplify its structure and boost teamwork. Its mobile unit already operates from Plano, and Texas hosts semiconductor plants plus other group facilities.

The firm seeks to gather more activities in a region that has drawn numerous American and global technology players in recent years.

Layoffs at the new headquarters as well

The Texas move has not brought only growth. A Samsung employee told Reuters that about 100 staff at the Plano site were recently let go, including members of the mobile division.

These reductions have raised worries about future actions. Employees fear further cuts and possible consolidation across mobile, appliance, and entertainment units.

Samsung clarified it is not pursuing wide global restructuring of its consumer products operations. The US adjustments stem mainly from headquarters relocation and operational consolidation.

At the close of 2025, Samsung had 11,770 employees in the United States, including semiconductor staff. Alongside the headquarters shift, Samsung SDS America announced that 179 further New Jersey positions may be affected by its own headquarters move. The subsidiary described the action as an office relocation rather than a broad layoff effort.

Texas becomes the center of gravity

Samsung's choice fits a larger pattern of firms moving headquarters and operations to Texas. In recent years, companies such as Tesla and Oracle have relocated there, pointing to tax policies, regulatory conditions, and access to technology and industrial centers.

For Samsung, Texas already serves as a vital base for its semiconductor activities, which have grown in importance with rising demand for AI infrastructure. Meanwhile, its consumer electronics and mobile segments continue to encounter strong competition and high operating expenses.

It remains uncertain how many of the affected New Jersey employees will move to Texas and how many will depart the company. For those involved, the outcome is evident: keeping their jobs will require shifting the focus of their lives to another state.
