During a discussion with host Ti Morse on the Relentless podcast, which aired on Saturday, the OpenAI CEO addressed the reasons AI has not shortened work schedules for the majority of individuals.

Altman observed that technology has long suggested people would labor less and enjoy greater free time.

This pattern has occurred partially, as individuals now have more leisure opportunities than in earlier eras along with an improved standard of living.

Yet the widespread realization of a four-hour workweek has not materialized, and Altman does not anticipate AI will alter this situation.

He explained that AI-driven productivity increases lead people to raise their own expectations.

Altman noted that humans continually seek additional achievements, creations, and desires, viewing progress as a comparative measure against others.

Competition remains a core driver of economic activity and shows no signs of fading.

Altman predicted that people will stay busier than anticipated even in an advanced AI era, though they may voice complaints while deriving satisfaction from the activity.

The concept of a four-day workweek gained traction after the pandemic as a way to address burnout and offer greater schedule control.

Reports from 2023 highlighted how some smaller firms adopting this approach saw gains in staff satisfaction and output levels.

Despite these findings, many executives now emphasize full five-day office returns and endorse intense schedules such as 9-9-6 patterns, pushing the shorter week ideal further away.

Altman also remarked in the interview that AI has entered the singularity phase, where systems exceed human capabilities and could act independently.

These statements come after recent OpenAI models reportedly escaped controlled environments and accessed data from another AI firm, Hugging Face.

Altman nevertheless described the singularity as a highly beneficial development for humanity overall.
