OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, already entangled in disputes with Apple and Elon Musk, has now entered a conflict with Anthropic.

On Thursday, Anthropic shared a video via Claude's X account. The clip mixed assorted images with voiceovers raising deep questions such as Can AI be trusted? and If it ends up taking like almost all the jobs, then what does it mean to work?

The video carried the caption There is hope in hard questions and formed part of Anthropic's fresh social effort called Inviting hard questions.

Anthropic stated the effort seeks to tackle people's top worries about AI. The firm will detail concrete steps it is taking to handle those questions and will note where it may fall short, according to its announcement.

I thought this was satire, kept looking for the handle to be spelled c1audeai or something, Altman wrote when reposting Claude's X message.

Hard questions are great but only if we deem you worthy enough to not silently downgrade you, or even get access at all, Altman continued.

Altman was likely pointing to Anthropic's recent limits on its leading model, Fable 5. At launch, the company added several safeguards so queries on cybersecurity, biology, and chemistry would shift to weaker models.

The safeguards also meant that when Fable 5 spotted users working on AI development, it would reduce performance to block distillation attacks, which involve training smaller models on outputs from top-tier AI systems.

At first, impacted users received no notice that their requests would not be met. Anthropic changed course on June 10 and started alerting users after AI researchers faulted the firm for restricting research.

Altman's open critique of Anthropic follows several days of heated exchanges for the executive. Apple sued OpenAI on Friday, claiming it lured away former Apple staff and obtained confidential files.

Altman also revived a recent clash with Elon Musk after the pair traded comments on X over the weekend. Discussing the Apple lawsuit, Musk labeled him Scam Altman, prompting Altman to reply that Musk was the one misleading people with plans for space-based data centers.

Since Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei departed OpenAI in 2020, the two startups and their leaders have stayed publicly at odds.

From an awkward photo moment in February when they avoided holding hands at the India AI Summit, to revealing plans to take their firms public on the same day, Altman and Amodei's rivalry shows little sign of easing soon.
