The UK Royal Navy announced on Wednesday that it has conducted tests releasing sea drones from a turboprop aircraft flying at 1300 feet, calling the effort trials for an unprecedented type of airdrop.

Kraken Technology Group supplied its K3 Scout uncrewed surface vessel for the exercise, while Capewell furnished an aerial delivery setup that includes a sled and parachute system.

According to the Royal Navy, the K3 Scout completed four parachute releases from an Airbus A400 transport aircraft during a six-day operation above the North Sea.

This airdrop method quickly increases the speed, range, and adaptability of sea drone operations since no port or nearby support vessel is required, the Royal Navy noted.

Captain Adam Ballard, an officer with the Royal Navy uncrewed surface vessel program, stated that limited self-deployment remains a key constraint for small uncrewed surface vehicles, prompting active exploration of launch options from motherships or mother aircraft.

Kraken indicated the K3 Scout entered the North Sea during Sea State 4 conditions, where waves may reach heights of 8 feet.

The vessel features electronic warfare capabilities, supports payloads reaching 600 kilograms, and is designed for missions lasting as long as 30 days.

Kraken describes the drone as suitable for strikes in open ocean and shallow areas, medical evacuation tasks, and forward screening operations.

Sea drones have gained swift attention following their strategic role in Ukraine's efforts against Russia's Black Sea Fleet, a major naval asset for the Kremlin.

The UK navy aims to integrate these drones alongside its crewed warships and personnel. In March the service revealed plans to acquire 20 Kraken uncrewed surface vessels as a basis for expanded sea drone employment.

The agreement totals roughly 16.5 million dollars, equating to about 825000 dollars per drone.
