When I first proposed the idea of a kids-only dinner to our upstairs neighbors, my main aim was carving out a bit of free time for myself.

Preparing meals for my three children (ages 4, 6, and 10) often feels never-ending. Just as I settle on a dish everyone likes, one child suddenly rejects pasta, rice, or chicken. The thought of a single evening free every other week seemed ideal.

Fortunately, our upstairs neighbors had two children who clicked well with mine, and the parents were equally keen for a short respite.

The logistics are simple

Each Tuesday evening, one household hosts the kids' dinner. We alternate weeks, and the parents simply escort the children to the other apartment. Parents may remain if they wish, yet they are urged to enjoy an hour to themselves.

We also established one important guideline: no tidying up before the meal. This setup is meant to simplify life, not complicate it.

I became a go-to adult for someone else's child

A few months into the routine, my 6-year-old neighbor entered, grasped my hand with tears forming, and led me to a quiet spot. We sat on the blue couch in my office, a space normally off-limits, while she described an argument with her mother. The moment mattered greatly to her, and her choice to confide in me felt significant as well.

Since then, we have shared additional conversations, and I have been struck by how meaningful they have become.

I have turned into a trusted adult figure for her, a role I never anticipated filling for another family's child, particularly while living in Germany far from my own nieces and nephews. When she feels especially frustrated with her parents, she declares she will run away to me. This outcome works well for her parents, who know she would reach a reliable adult just two floors down.

My neighbors provide the same support for my three children. On Tuesdays, after dropping their backpacks at home, my kids dash upstairs eager to share playground stories with Laura or challenge Michael with a new riddle.

Without nearby grandparents or aunts and uncles, the weekly dinners supply my children with another pair of adults, beyond teachers, who inquire about ballet, speech therapy, and school reports.

The kids built something of their own

Around the table the children have created their own space. They decide which toys to bring, settle seating arrangements, and occasionally arrive with handwritten messages.

They dine without adults present, allowing their discussions to focus on topics such as Pokémon cards or upcoming birthday parties.

After the meal, while I handle the kitchen, the five children enjoy free playtime. I sometimes discover my 4-year-old daughter and the 3-year-old neighbor side by side in a room, reading together or listening to a Frozen story on the Tonie box. At other moments my ten-year-old reads aloud to the younger ones or invents inclusive games.

What started as a break became something more

Preparing food for five children rather than three has proven unexpectedly enjoyable. The extra servings do not demand much additional effort, and the lively mood encourages creative ideas reminiscent of my pre-parenting dinner parties.

Yet the meals remain straightforward: chicken nuggets with fries, a platter of sliced meats and vegetables, or breakfast served at dinner. When time allows, we prepare avocado sushi together.

Once everyone returns home, I receive updates on how my children ate, including whether my daughter, who often fills up on preschool snacks, tried anything or whether my oldest son finished an entire package of hot dogs alone.

I had sought relief from constant meal preparation, yet my children gained another set of caring adults living just two flights away.

One dinner at a time, it feels as though we are forming a true community.
