At 36 I seemed to possess all I had pursued.

I held a senior communications role at a leading global entertainment firm complete with the position and compensation I had strived for throughout my career.

Beyond the ideal position I enjoyed a strong circle of friends and relatives a stable partnership and frequent international travel.

I believed I was finally shaping the existence and connections I had long desired. Then abruptly everything shifted.

Breakup and job loss prompted life reevaluation

Upon returning from a trip with friends my partner of four years and I held a difficult yet essential discussion that led us to conclude our relationship.

It proved comforting to resume familiar patterns such as viewing favorite episodes of Real Housewives sharing meals attending events as companions and discussing our days face to face rather than by phone.

I appreciated every shared moment though I expected to remain no longer than six months.

Thus rather than hastening to restore my prior situation I chose to embrace the present one. I resolved that if staying in New Orleans I would engage fully.

After discovering fresh areas of the city participating in local gatherings and sampling new exercise sessions I began to appreciate my hometown differently.

When visiting as an adult I had doubted I could feel content residing here once more. Yet previously I lacked a support network having drifted from childhood companions and rarely staying long enough to rebuild ties.

Now a year and a half after returning my circumstances differ greatly from what I once envisioned. I launched a venture formed a thriving mix of longstanding and recent friends developed a personal brand and uncovered a talent for fostering community I had not recognized before.

Above all I gained an unexpected realization I enjoy residing in New Orleans again and feel genuinely content.

The city offered room to recover and reconnect with myself following one of the toughest phases in my professional life.

I remain uncertain whether living at home will last indefinitely but at present I feel satisfied and aim to continue growing here until the subsequent opportunity arises.

In the end coming back did not derail my path it supported its renewal.
