We prioritize ensuring our daughter stays connected to her heritage despite the miles. Each summer I accompany her to France for a month, after which she travels to New Mexico with my husband for two weeks. Since neither of us can take the full summer off, we spend this period separated.

These journeys enable her to strengthen ties with both family sides, nurture relationships, and form enduring recollections. We feel this window may close once she reaches her teens, so we make the most of it presently. During holidays, when schedules permit, we travel together to France or New Mexico and skip other destinations.

To maintain contact between visits we schedule weekly video chats, though they stay short since she prefers other forms of interaction. Instead we recount numerous family anecdotes, particularly from our own youths, and frequently mention relatives in daily talk. This approach helps her understand them better and feel more connected. I also use French with her regularly to prevent communication gaps with my side and to strengthen her sense of identity.

Our child may lack relatives close at hand, yet she understands that many individuals, near or distant, hold her in high regard.
