After earning a bachelor's degree in computer science during 2023, a software firm extended an offer for a role paying $60,000 each year.

The requirement? Relocating from my current home.

I had lived on Long Island throughout my life, yet no office existed within easy reach of my family's residence. The idea of moving seemed intimidating, and traveling far away felt even harder.

Still, tough job conditions and rising prices in New York left little option, so I prepared to head to Texas.

The East Coast proved nearly impossible to afford

Basic calculations revealed average apartment rents across most East Coast states reached $2,000 to $3,000 monthly.

That total would hit roughly $30,000 over twelve months, or half my yearly pay before other costs.

New York State taxes run high on top of federal rates. Quick estimates showed less than half my salary remaining after essentials like food, insurance, utilities, and emergency funds.

Following those deductions, almost nothing remained for student loan payments or building savings toward a future home purchase.

Texas stood out as the far cheaper choice

Exploring possibilities showed an office location in San Antonio. Learning about this new city revealed surprising details.

Rents in a sizable place like San Antonio averaged $1,000 to $1,500 monthly. Texas charges no state income tax.

The same position would leave far more income available for spending and saving when based in Texas.

I chose to relocate across the country to Texas

Although the figures looked strong, I had never traveled south of Virginia before this change. San Antonio remained unknown, and no relatives or contacts offered local help.

I secured housing in the new city from afar by reviewing maps, compiling lists of well-placed options, and checking tenant feedback. Moderate ratings between two and four stars helped avoid overly positive claims.

Crime data checks showed low rates in preferred areas. The search then limited travel time to five minutes.

Texas brought financial comfort

Following the move, rent came to about $1,250 monthly for a 700-square-foot one-bedroom unit that included an in-home washer and dryer plus access to a gym and pool.

Personal finance guidelines suggest the 50/30/20 approach, allocating 50 percent to needs, 30 percent to wants, and 20 percent to savings. In Texas, needs stayed below 50 percent while savings exceeded 40 percent of earnings.

None of this would have worked on the East Coast with an entry-level salary right after graduation.

Lower home prices in Texas also made ownership goals seem realistic at last.

The cross-country move succeeded on my terms

As a recent graduate, I encountered limited pay offers, repeated layoffs, and unstable job conditions.

Success came from shifting out of a high-cost state into one that cut living expenses by half.

Other new graduates and early-career workers could achieve similar results with the same approach.
