Costs continue climbing throughout Europe while compensation fails to match the increase.

EU inflation hit 3.2 percent in April 2026, marking the peak since January 2024, and preliminary Eurostat figures indicate further rises in May.

Yet salary increases shown in eurozone job advertisements lag behind price growth, per Indeed data. Consequently inflation exceeds posted wage gains across the continent, reducing workers purchasing power as earnings cover fewer goods and services.

These pressures follow the largest price surge in decades for the EU. Annual inflation exceeded 11 percent in 2022, fueled mainly by energy expenses after Russia's Ukraine invasion.

How do inflation and posted wage growth stack up among leading European economies?

Middle East Conflict Drives Higher Inflation

Inflation stayed under 3 percent from early 2024 until lately. A steady climb began after the joint US-Israeli action against Iran and Tehran's reply in late February 2026.

EU annual inflation registered 2 percent in January 2026. It jumped to 2.8 percent in March and 3.2 percent in April.

Post-pandemic price rises diminished purchasing power in major European economies when consumer costs advanced quicker than pay. As of early 2026, cumulative real posted wages stayed beneath pre-pandemic levels in Europe's five largest economies, according to Indeed.

With inflation climbing after the latest Middle East conflict, eurozone wage growth dropped below inflation in March 2026 and the shortfall grew in April. This ended a pattern that started in September 2023 when posted wage growth had stayed ahead of inflation.

Annual consumer prices reached 3.0 percent in the eurozone during April, so wages no longer match living costs, based on Indeed's wage tracker showing 2.3 percent year-over-year posted wage growth.

Posted wage growth stood at 2.4 percent in January 2026 while inflation was only 1.7 percent, showing the rapid shift.

"Global energy price shock pressures now appear in European figures, cutting real wage improvements," said Aubrey Woessner, associate economist at the Indeed Hiring Lab.

Why the UK Defies the Pattern

Inflation and posted wage growth differ among major European economies. The UK leads with 4 percent year-on-year posted wage growth, exceeding its 2.8 percent inflation rate.

"Even so real wage growth stalls. The drop in real purchasing power will dampen demand ahead, compounding other economic challenges," Woessner added.

Pawel Adrjan, director of economic research at Indeed, noted the UK retains a real-wage buffer that much of the eurozone has lost. UK inflation eased in April thanks to government steps lowering energy bills, while prices rose elsewhere on the continent.

"Yet the UK's real wage buffer shrinks rapidly. Posted wage growth reached 4.0 percent year on year in April, aided partly by a 4.1 percent minimum wage increase, yet this marked the slowest pace in four years," he told Euronews Business.

"Because hiring stays soft, recent real wage gains will fade quickly if the Iran conflict sustains high oil and gas prices."

The UK is not unique. As of April 2026 posted wage growth also topped inflation in Germany and Ireland, though the difference proved smaller. Germany showed 3.2 percent posted wage growth against 2.9 percent inflation. Ireland recorded an even slimmer margin with 3.7 percent posted wage growth versus 3.6 percent inflation.

Italy and France: Workers Face Greatest Strain

Italy and France rank as the countries where workers suffer most. Posted wage growth in France held steady at 1.1 percent through 2026 while inflation rose from 0.4 percent in January to 2.5 percent in April.

Workers also lose ground in Italy. Posted wage growth remained below 0.8 percent since mid-2025 while inflation stayed ahead over the past year. The difference widened this year as inflation hit 2.8 percent in April.

Although monthly patterns give helpful views, cumulative real wage growth over recent years offers a broader perspective.
