Graham believes Stockholm could evolve into Europe's tech hub if founders return home after gaining experience abroad.

Stockholm has emerged as a leading European startup destination, nurturing high-growth AI ventures like Lovable, Legora, and Sana Labs.

However, Paul Graham insists ambitious founders should head to Silicon Valley.

"Should I go there?" the Y Combinator cofounder questioned in a speech to Swedish founders last month, footage of which surfaced online Wednesday. "Yes, you should. You can go there for a bit and then come back, but you should at least go."

Graham's comments arrive amid rising buzz around Stockholm's startup scene. Data from Dealroom indicates the Swedish capital hosts over 1,800 startups as of 2025, boasting a combined enterprise value exceeding $236 billion.

Even so, Graham maintains Silicon Valley holds unmatched value thanks to its dense clusters of founders, investors, and engineers.

He draws parallels to legendary hubs of excellence, such as Paris in the 1870s for painters or Hollywood in the 1950s for filmmakers, where top talent historically converged.

"What exactly do you get when you move to the big center?" Graham asked. "You get the best peers."

Graham highlights how Silicon Valley fosters unparalleled serendipitous interactions among driven individuals.

"There's nothing in the world that's better than serendipitous meetings with people who are working on the same stuff," he remarked.

The region also runs at a brisker tempo than typical European startup environments.

"Investors in Silicon Valley decide a lot faster," Graham explained, attributing this to intense rivalry that compels venture capitalists to pounce on strong opportunities.

He cited Dropbox as a case in point: a Boston VC firm dragged its feet for months, dispensing advice sans commitment, only to hastily proffer a term sheet with no valuation set once Sequoia Capital entered the fray and founder Drew Houston gained leverage.

Graham further posits that Silicon Valley offers profound psychological boosts.

"You go there and you see these people and you think, 'Okay, I could do that,'" he said. "I could be like that guy if I worked as hard."

That said, Graham does not entirely discount Stockholm's prospects.

Founders who spend time in Silicon Valley and then return can bolster home ecosystems by importing funds, connections, and entrepreneurial ethos.

With sufficient returnees, Stockholm might claim the title of "the Silicon Valley of Europe."

"That job is still up for grabs," Graham noted. "All you need is a place founders want to live and a critical mass of them."

Already, some Swedish talents are repatriating after stints overseas.

Patrik Torstensson, once an engineering director at Meta, recently signed on with Lovable in Stockholm following over a decade in Silicon Valley and London. He shared with Business Insider last month his desire to "give back to Europe and Sweden."
