The mismatch between school schedules and workplace demands hits families hard again, with fresh AllJobs data exposing the heavy price of the summer months.

For countless families across the country, July and August bring not only beach trips and treats but also a grueling test of logistics and finances. While kids enjoy nearly two months off, the job market runs normally, leaving parents caught in a tough spot created by the mismatch between school calendars and economic needs.

A recent AllJobs poll of parents with children under 15 shows the strain clearly. The standout result reveals that 39 percent of these parents started the break with no accrued vacation days remaining. This issue leads to real financial pain: 43 percent must accept pay cuts for any extra days taken, worsening the impact amid higher living costs and added summer spending. Many hold back their limited days for later holidays or crises, while others used them earlier for sick kids or prior breaks and now scramble for alternatives.

Looking at actual plans, 17 percent expect to take over 10 vacation days this summer, 23 percent will use 5 to 10 days, and 25 percent will take just 1 to 5 days. In contrast, 35 percent will take none, largely because none remain or because income loss is unaffordable.

Mothers vs. Fathers

The survey also uncovered a notable gender difference in remaining vacation balances. Nearly half of working men (45 percent) entered summer with zero days available, versus 35 percent of women. Meanwhile, 29 percent of women had more than 10 days left, compared with just 10 percent of men. This difference may reflect varying usage habits during the year, job types, or differences in work hours between genders.

Workplace support often falls short. Fifty-seven percent of parents said their employer has no summer shutdown at all, so they must arrange their own fixes. Only 17 percent work where a full shutdown occurs, and 26 percent are unsure if one is planned. Office flexibility stays tight too: 60 percent cannot bring children in at all. Just 28 percent can do so as needed, while 12 percent have access only on special organized days. As a result, 21 percent depend heavily on grandparents for coverage.

Some employers do offer help. Thirty-six percent permit extra days with approval and no pay loss, 20 percent allow partial remote work to balance duties, and 15 percent let staff skip days without marking them as vacation.

"Summer brings repeated high costs for parents, both financial and in lost leave," notes Liat Ben-Torah Shushan, vice president of career and placement at AllJobs. "Leave days go beyond contract details to act as a vital tool for work-life balance and career planning. Flexible and hybrid options are now expected parts of the employee-employer agreement. In summer especially, when parents juggle duties, those who provide flexibility see stronger commitment and continued results even in tough times."
