I have long preferred urban settings, so the choice to leave Melbourne for Bright in country Victoria back in 2021 felt uncertain at first. Over four years our household grew fond of the unhurried rhythm and friendly locals in that alpine spot near the Victorian Alps.

Yet this January we relocated from Bright to the Gold Coast, my childhood home. My parents needed more support as their health faded, and I wanted meaningful time with them while possible.

Shifting from a regional community under three thousand residents to a bustling city nearing seven hundred thousand marked a major change for our family of five. We built new social circles, relearned traffic signals, and adjusted to constant urban energy.

The move has delivered clear benefits, especially for the children who have developed greater adaptability. Still, certain aspects of regional living remain hard to replace.

Every decision involves balance, and ours has been no exception.

Access to everyday needs has improved greatly

In country Victoria the closest large stores sat an hour away, turning simple errands into full-day outings. Now shops, restaurants, and services sit within easy reach, offering quick choices from Italian to Nepalese cuisine plus beaches, trails, events, and a lively dining scene.

Professional and learning paths have expanded

Urban centers provide stronger job and schooling options overall. My husband gained the most by opening a new clinic for his remedial massage practice. He has since worked with prominent Australian athletes, something unlikely in our former town unless visitors arrived on holiday.

The children likewise thrive in classes and activities that simply did not exist before.

Privacy and variety stand out as real advantages

Bad days in Bright meant running into familiar faces everywhere, even during low moments at the shops. City life offers welcome distance and the comfort of blending into the crowd when needed.

Cultural options also feel richer, with varied performances, exhibits, and cuisines that eased a sense of isolation after years away. The children now meet peers from many different backgrounds, which we value highly.

Yet open landscapes and immediate nature remain missed

Bright sits amid peaks, woodlands, waterways, and paths, with parks close by for endless outdoor pursuits. The Gold Coast offers sun and scenery too, yet reaching them requires a drive. I have noticed less daily movement and a slight weight gain as a result.

A recent visit back to Bright reminded me of the spacious feel and cleaner air I once took for granted. Suburban blocks here sit closer together, and conversations from neighboring homes often carry through.

The tight community and relaxed tempo are also absent

New friends on the Gold Coast have been kind and helpful, yet schedules feel tighter and visits occur less frequently. In Bright everyone lived nearby, making regular contact simple and fostering stronger bonds that provided real security.

City weeks have stayed packed since arrival. During our last trip to Bright my tension eased noticeably, highlighting the appeal of an unhurried existence.

Looking ahead to future choices

We planned to decide after twelve months, yet that point has arrived without a clear answer. We will stay through 2027 before reviewing again. Part of me longs for the open skies and calm I once knew, while daily conveniences like nearby stores keep us content for now.

No single location fits every stage of life. The Gold Coast currently supplies ease, options, and family time, so we plan to make the most of city living while we are here.
