Planning our initial trip to Vietnam last year meant bypassing the standard recommendations to visit several spots including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Phu Quoc.

We opted instead for a focused stay and based our full 11 days in Hoi An to avoid the hassles of moving around.

What began as a sensible choice for traveling alongside our 9-year-old daughter became an ideal way to experience the nation.

The area offers enough diversity in one spot that skipping other parts of Vietnam never felt like a loss. I am already eager to return.

Mornings Could Be Spent at the Shore While Afternoons Involved Cultural Sites

Sticking to one base removed the usual travel hassles. We reached our hotel, Lasenta Boutique, within 45 minutes after arriving at Da Nang International Airport.

The hotel sits near rice fields and includes a pool that delighted our daughter. Everything felt simple to reach from there.

Grab rides, the local version of ride-sharing apps, cost only a few dollars and made getting around simple and cheap. The hotel supplied free bicycles too, a common choice for touring the bike-friendly paths in Hoi An.

We kept a relaxed pace by dividing days between swims at An Bang Beach and strolls in the old town amid streets lined with mustard-yellow buildings covered in bright pink and purple bougainvillea blooms.

Although day trips to the Marble Mountains or Ba Na Hills were possible, we stayed so happy in Hoi An that our sole outing was to VinWonders, the leading theme park nearby.

Rather than time on the move, we enjoyed full immersion in Hoi An with room left for rest.

Standout Recollections Came From the Local Food Offerings

The dining options in Hoi An cover a wide range. We appreciated being able to have international favorites like Mexican dishes and burgers one day and sample local specialties the next.

While bánh mì draws plenty of praise, cao lầu noodles and cơm gà chicken stood out for me along with poolside drinks at the hotel.

We also located the well-known Mót iced tea, which proved so refreshing that its online popularity made sense.

Coffee emerged as the true favorite. After many coconut and condensed milk versions at spots like Faifo Coffee, I grew fond of it and now regularly bring Vietnamese coffee back to my home in Japan.

Craft Villages Deepened My Sense of Local Culture

While the ancient town looks lovely, the traditional craft villages convinced me of Hoi An's appeal.

At Thanh Ha pottery village, artisans helped shape small vases by hand, and we saw them use air fryers as clever small kilns.

At the silk village, we followed the process from silkworms through weaving and created our own bamboo-framed silk lanterns. They are not perfect but now hang at home as reminders that mass-produced items lack.

We also tried wood carving at Kim Bong carpentry village and sampled cinnamon bark used for incense sticks.

I returned with a bag of handmade items such as bronze candle holders from Phuoc Kieu village. These are displayed and used often unlike typical souvenirs.

The Hoi An Memories Show provided the peak experience as 500 skilled performers presented the trading past in a striking outdoor setting.

Hoi An Turned Out to Be Simple for Travel With a Child

I had concerns before the trip that the busy traffic would complicate visits with children.

Hoi An proved easy instead. The ancient town turns car-free during busy times so we could walk freely without watching for motorbikes.

Many activities such as cooking classes and lantern-making suit children and let our daughter take part in the culture.

The standout feature for families is the genuine friendliness of locals. Warm service appears everywhere from hotel staff braiding my daughter's hair to tailors offering tips like longtime acquaintances.

Many sites in Vietnam deserve a visit but Hoi An has become the benchmark for our future trips.

Ending our stay with an evening by the Thu Bon River watching lanterns float past confirmed this would not be our final visit.
