On Friday, New York Attorney General Letitia James delivered a subpoena to OpenAI. This action, initially reported by The Wall Street Journal, demands a broad array of records concerning user interaction, data management practices, advanced AI models, and specific activities involving different age groups.

This subpoena adds to OpenAI's existing legal challenges, which include disputes over copyright, privacy concerns, and a notable case involving Elon Musk and Sam Altman.

Of particular note are several lawsuits alleging that ChatGPT played a role in users' decisions regarding suicide. The company has responded by noting that its tool is not intended as a replacement for professional mental health services and has incorporated expert advice to better handle sensitive scenarios.

Additionally, the family of a victim from a shooting incident at Florida State University has pursued legal action against OpenAI, claiming the chatbot's safety measures did not detect potential threats in communications. Florida's Attorney General has also initiated a lawsuit related to this event.

In the Florida complaint, officials accuse ChatGPT of contributing to violent acts and promoting self-harm among vulnerable individuals, while also fostering dependency through simulated empathy without adequate supervision.

OpenAI has reiterated its implementation of additional safety protocols in light of these events, expressing sympathy for affected families.

The multi-state probe echoes a prior examination of TikTok that led to litigation across 14 states, focusing on addictive design elements and their impact on adolescent well-being. Both efforts are spearheaded by attorneys general from California and New York.
